13 Ginger Recipes To Make This Winter Because Ginger is the Sh*t

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Carleton chapter.

Ginger should be grouped in with all those foods we consider to be “superfoods” and lust after hoping they’ll cure us of every illness possible. Ginger’s superpowers include being an anti-inflammatory and a digestive aid, not to mention it also settles your stomach if you’re feeling queasy.

Ginger is cheap, it stays for a while, and it can be incorporated into pretty much anything you’re eating or drinking. So, you don’t have any excuse not to make these ginger recipes while you’re surviving these flu-infested winter months.

1. Beet, Ginger, and Coconut Soup

Soup is exactly what you need to combat this season. If you’re already feeling a little lousy, this soup is the best pick-me-up that will actually help you get better while soothing your winter blues. If there’s one skill you should master in college, it’s making your own soup so you never have to eat a plain bouillon cube again. (Guilty).

2. Ginger Carrot Dressing

As an avid eater of the classic olive oil and vinegar dressing, I can admit that it gets a bit old. This carrot ginger dressing is way more flavourful and will actually add an element to you salad besides wetting your lettuce.

3. Chocolate Orange and Ginger Cupcake

In the mood for something sweet? Ginger can have a place in your desserts too. Based on the last recipe, you can probably tell that orange and ginger are a power couple. And chocolate and orange? You bet. So, the three together must be a dynamic trio.

Yes, ginger also belongs in your wine. Plan this wine night way in advance because you need to let this sit for a week to let the ginger and orange completely infuse into the wine.

6. Roasted Corn & Asparagus, Coconut-Miso, and Miso-Ginger Ramen

Even your ramen can get a health kick with a bit of ginger. Don’t be too scared by too extra-long title, you can totally pull off this recipe. And it will be way better than your Mr. Noodle packet you’ve been passing off as ramen.

More dessert because dessert’s the bomb. Prep time for this cheesecake take one minute (yes, one minute). The ginger and pumpkin duo will make you feel like it’s fall again even though it’s the dead of winter.

Ginger honey tea is the most soothing drink you’ll have this winter. I like to add in a bit of lemon too. I’ve been drinking this tea every day for the past week and I feel more hydrated, healthier and more awake too.

10. Ginger Shot

If you’re a brave soul, see if you can handle this straight up ginger shot. I warn you, it will make you feel like your insides are burning (in a good way) so don’t try and drink too much. But it will feel damn good once you stop feeling like your body is on fire.

11. Paleo Ginger Glazed Doughnuts

I can only imagine from the look of these doughnuts that they taste like gingerbread goodness. They’re baked (which means their healthier than deep-fried doughnuts) and their not difficult to make. So get on it.

12. Ginger-Sriracha Turkey Burgers

Making your own burgers is great because you can totally customize it to your taste and diet. They’re extremely easy to make and only require one tool — your hands. You can also store leftovers in the freezer for a dinner or lunch later on in the week.

13. Ginger Honey Hot Wings

The Superbowl might be over but that doesn’t mean you can’t plan another wing night. These chicken wings aren’t your average bar snack, they’re loaded with sweetness and spice, and some classic Asian flavours that will surely set the apart.  Be sure to make a lot because your friends will demolish them in a matter of minutes.

I bet you didn’t know you could eat ginger with basically any meal. You’re welcome. There’s no excuse to skip the ginger next time you go grocery shopping, you’ll fall in love with the versatility of ginger and you’ll definitely make it a staple in your kitchen.
