10 Lines That Prove Drake is the Greatest Lyricist in the Rap Game

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Carleton chapter.

Drake, Champagne Papi, the 6ix God – whatever you want to call him, he is the greatest lyricist in the rap game.

Trust me, I know how controversial that statement is. You’re probably thinking, “How could you say that? Do you KNOW how many other rappers are out there? Eminem? Tupac?” But just hear me out.

Drake can rap about anything: food, girls (Rihanna), breakups, makeups – whatever it is, he gets all up in your #feels. As for his lyrics, they’re obviously iconic. I mean, we’re talking about the man who came up with YOLO here.

So, here we have a list of 10 times Drake proved to all of us just how great he is.

10. Pop Style

“Turn my birthday into a lifestyle”

Don’t you wish everyday was your birthday? You get showered with presents, indulge in all your favourite cheat meals, and party like there’s no tomorrow

#SpoonTip: make everyday feel like your birthday with these shots

9. You & The 6

“Having conversations with mama, man, my life is a mess”

This is probably one of the most relatable Drake lyrics ever. Let’s be real, as university students we’ve all been there. Sometimes we just need mom to help us sort it all out. If Drake’s not afraid to admit that sometimes he needs some mom talk, neither should you.

8.  Fake Love

“I got fake people showing fake love to me”

I know I just said number nine was one of the most relatable Drake lyrics, but so is this. Just remember folks, haters gonna hate. We’ll always come across those people in our lives, but Drake is always here to remind us we deserve better than fake love.

7. Lord Knows

“All drinks on the house like snoopy”

I really don’t know how Drake comes up with this stuff, but it is pure genius. That being said, next round is on me!

6. Too Good

“I’m too good for you, I’m way too good for you”

Again, the 6ix God proves himself to be a lyrical genius with this gem. He just gets it. Never let anyone tell you you’re not good enough, and above all remember to respect yourself. I’d like to dedicate this one to all of my exes.

5. Energy

“Bout to call your ass an uber, I got somewhere to be”

Straight savage papi. Although, calling an uber for someone isn’t so bad… especially when it’s an uberEATS

4. Take Care

“It’s my birthday I’ll get high if I want to”

#TRUE

Aside from understanding the complexity of love, relationships, heartbreak and life, Drake just gets birthdays (refer to #10). It’s your birthday, so do whatever the f*ck you want.

#SpoonTip: If you are high on your birthday, make sure you check out these munchies

3. Thank Me Now

“Do I ever come up in discussion, over double pump lattes and low fat muffins?”

Of course you do Drake – as does every guy ever. Coffee shops are the go to place for girl talk. Double pump lattes, low-fat muffins, and boy talk? Yes please. Some Starbucks therapy is always a must.

2.  The Motto

“You only live once – that’s the motto YOLO”

The line that started it all. Out partying when you have an assignment due tomorrow? YOLO. Did you just eat that entire bag of chips on your own? YOLO. Spend too much of your time napping? YOLO.  If you’re just sliding by in uni living on this motto, you have Drake to thank.

1. Child’s Play

“Why you gotta fight with me at Cheesecake? You know I love to go there”

Why do you have to fight with Drake at Cheesecake? What do you have against cheesecake? And why are you even fighting with Drake in the first place? Drake reminds us that no matter what’s going wrong in our lives, never EVER, let that ruin your go-to restaurant. Food trumps fights. Always.

I may not know the answers to those questions, but I do know that line is a classic.

Whether you love Drake or hate him, you have to respect his art. I mean seriously, who else could talk about cheesecake in a rap song and get away with it?

But if Drizzy isn’t your jam, throw on something else. Throw on your favourite music, sit back and relax. Regardless of our musical opinions, let’s not forget that music is one of the best ways to de-stress
