Last week I found myself walking around lower Manhattan and decided to check out some dessert places I have seen on Instagram. In addition to Dominique Ansel Bakery, I came across Flour Shop which I decided to pop into and try a few treats.
What Is Flour Shop?
Founded by Amirah Kassem, Flour Shop developed following Kassem's love for baking and sculpting with her mother in Mexico where she learned the art of multi-sensory experience. Flour Shop is widely known for their explosion cakes which you have probably seen on Instagram with their bright colors and rainbow sprinkles.
Kaseem has been recognized by the Whitney Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, and essentially every fashion party in NYC for her creative designs inspired by glitter, rainbows, unicorns, bubbles, sparkles, cotton candy, donuts, imagination, and Saturday morning cartoons.
Where Is Flour Shop?
Flour Shop is located in New York City on 177 Lafayette Street. While walking down the block you can't help but look at the colorful ball pit that rests inside of the window display.
What Treats Can You Find?
Flour Shop is home to many delicious and brightly colored confections that you can enjoy. Flour Shop is known for their exploding cakes, rainbow cake pops and cake balls, and cookie cakes. One of their most popular cakes is called "Cara the Unicorn" which contains 6 rainbow vanilla layers, cream cheese frosting, a ice cream cone horn, chocolate ears, and contain a sprinkle surprise in the center.
Flour Shop also makes cakes inspired by some popular foods including burgers, popcorn, donuts, bagels with lox, pancakes, and berry pie.
Overall Thoughts
I ordered the rainbow push pop and I thought it was tasty, but I don't think it was worth $8. I think there was cream cheese frosting holding the layers together which I think could have been replaced with vanilla for a sweeter taste. I thought the aesthetic of the place was very colorful, chic, and trendy. I can't speak for the exploding cakes because I have never had one, but what I have heard is that they are delicious and worth every penny.
