10 Food Combinations That Prove Peanut Butter is the Ultimate Condiment

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Iowa chapter.

My love for peanut butter has no limits. I will be the first to admit that I am completely addicted, and I can go through a two-pound jar from BJ’s in less than a month all by myself. Because I love peanut butter so much, I set out on a quest to prove that peanut butter goes great with everything.

The theory has yet to be proven wrong…

1. Peanut Butter and Avocado

A shameless plug for my own recipe, but seriously, peanut butter and avocado is a magic combination. Put it on toast, use them both on a sandwich, or eat an avocado straight up covered with peanut butter–whatever floats your boat.

2. Spring Rolls with Peanut Sauce

Steamed or fried, vegan or stuffed full of pork, sweet or savory, spring rolls are always taken up a notch when dipped in a creamy peanut sauce.

3. Peanut Butter and Melon

As far as fruit goes, the ones more commonly paired with peanut butter tend to be bananas, apples, and strawberries. But peanut butter is actually super good paired with melon. Especially since it’s beginning to be melon season, now’s the perfect time to give this combo a try.

4. Peanut Butter and Fish

Peanut butter makes for a great sauce to top fish or even compliment a sushi roll. My uncle also swears by peanut butter and tuna sandwiches, so if you don’t feel like whipping up a fancy peanut sauce, you can stay simple with some peanut butter and canned tuna — perfect, cheap fare for college dorms.

5. African Peanut Stew

Warm, flavorful comfort food made with ingredients like sweet potatoes, collard greens, ginger, and — you guessed it — creamy peanut butter. The flavor of the peanut butter is less pronounced mixed with the other ingredients, but the hint of peanut does wonders for this dish.

6. Peanut Butter Burger

Boston Burger Company does their’s with cinnamon sugar fried bananas, bacon, and peanut butter (amazing), but you can simply spread some peanut butter on a beef, turkey, or veggie burger and you’ll be good to go. If you’re feeling really adventurous, try putting the peanut butter in your burger.

7. Peanut Butter and Carrots

Out of hummus? This combo is just as good. I would say it’s better, but I can’t knock my love for hummus.

8. Peanut Butter Hummus

Alternatively, if you have too much hummus lying around (although too much hummus is never a bad thing) and you can’t decide between peanut butter and hummus to top your sandwich or meal, why not have both?

9. Peanut Butter and Alcohol

Apparently, peanut butter cocktails are a thing. Peanut butter without the alcohol already has me feeling good, so I can only imagine how great this would be.

10. Peanut Butter and Potatoes

Sweet, purple, red, yellow, white–doesn’t matter what kind of potato you have, you can bake or roast them, drizzle (or if you’re me, drench) some peanut butter on top, and you’re all set. You can even make them into brownies.

Bananas and cinnamon are optional, but considering how good the peanut butter and banana combo is, might as well, right?

Whether it’s on a sandwich, blended into a sauce, topping your favorite food, or mixed into your drink, peanut butter is pretty damn amazing. These combos and recipes prove that peanut butter really does go great with everything. So the next time your meal needs an extra something, get out your jar of Jif (or whatever brand you have on hand) and give it a shot.
