Food waste is a huge problem, not only for society, but for our environment. A third of food goes uneaten and thrown out, which contributes to issues such as hunger, food insecurity, climate change, and pollution. While you yourself might believe that you don’t contribute to the problem, there’s still something that you can do to reduce food waste. This is where Cans Get You Cooking comes into play.

What is Cans Get You Cooking?

Cans Get You Cooking is an initiative that was created to help educate people as to why and how cooking with canned foods is cool, and that doing such comes with benefits. The nice thing about canned foods is that they’re recyclable, and they can also help families of four get the necessary serving of 42 cups of fruits and 53 cups of veggies on a weekly basis, since properly consuming the necessary amount of fruits and veggies is a struggle. Utilizing canned foods also helps to prevent food waste, since nearly half of all fresh produce that’s purchased in the United States of America is thrown away. Do you want to know what that is? Gross. 100% unacceptable and unsustainable. 

What else is there to know about Cans Get You Cooking?

The nice thing about Cans Get You Cooking is that they have an array of recipes on their website on their website that range from brunch dishes to soups and chilis to sandwiches and burgers and desserts and smoothies. And guess what? All of the recipes that are on the website utilize canned foods in some way, shape, or form. However, while canned foods have the full on potential to take up lots of space in your kitchen, they do have a long shelf life of up to an entire year and a half, which is great if you’re not going to use them immediately upon returning from the grocery store. Besides; if you’re broke and on a budget, utilizing canned foods in the kitchen is a viable option because they tend to be less expensive than fresh produce. 

While being conscious of our food intake and of our food waste can be difficult at times, it doesn’t have to be so hard. With all great things come change, and sometimes, change requires seeking help from someone else; in this case, that someone else is the group that’s known as Cans Get You Cooking. Besides, with the abundance of issues that our planet is currently facing, wouldn’t it be nice to try and help out? We need to start somewhere, and the only ones that can make change happen is us.
