Move Over Avocado Toast: Strawberry Toast Should Be Your New Breakfast

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Wisconsin chapter.

It’s not breaking news that avocado toast is popular. If you just search #toasttuesday on Instagram, you will see dozens of variations of avocado toast. Every time I scroll through my feed, I can’t help but wonder how so many people are missing out on strawberry toast.

Strawberry toast is an amped up version of your typical bread and jam. However, instead of having a sugary spread, you get a  burst of flavor from the fresh fruit. Still not convinced? Here are some more reasons why strawberry toast may just be your new go-to meal.

Why Strawberries?

First of all, May is National Strawberry Month for a reason. We are getting to the perfect time of year to eat fresh strawberries. Eating local fruit that’s in season is the best way to enjoy the tastes of summer. In Wisconsin, I can’t just go to my local farmer’s market and pick up a perfect avocado, but strawberries? Absolutely.

Strawberries have a wide range of positive impacts on your health. First of all, they are in the top 10 of fruits and vegetables for antioxidant content. This means they have a lot of vitamin C, which helps ward off cancer and boost your immunity. Antioxidants in strawberries can also help lower your blood cholesterol and help reduce inflammation.

To get started with your toast, I recommend having a high quality, crusty bread that can support all of your toppings, plus your freshly washed strawberries of course. Strawberry toast is really versatile, and here are a couple of my favorite combinations to help get your creative juices flowing.

Almond Butter, Strawberries, Cocoa Powder

This toast is the perfect combo of sweet, savory, and chocolatey. Sometimes I add chia seeds instead of cocoa powder for an added crunch. Not a fan of almond butter? No problem. Any kind of nut butter would work. Peanut butter would give you nostalgia of the classic PB&J.

Yogurt, Strawberries, Granola, and Coconut

Here you have creamy with sweet with crunch with flaky. One great use for yogurt is to use it as a toast topping. The creaminess counteracts the crunch of the toast and granola, while the strawberries add sweetness.

Chocolate Hazelnut Butter and Strawberries

Nutella and strawberries is a combo made in heaven. This toast can be eaten for both breakfast and dessert, and it always satisfies my chocolate cravings while still filling me up for the day. Currently I use Justin’s Chocolate Hazelnut Butter for a version with more protein, but any kind of chocolate and nut-based butter will do the trick.

Avocado, Strawberries, and Nuts

I’m not completely hating on avocado toast, and this is my proof. The creaminess of the avocado added to  the sweet, brightness of the strawberry is the perfect combo of tangy, sweet, and creamy. Add some chia seeds or nuts for some crunch, and you have yourself a healthy, filling breakfast that captures every taste of summer.

Put avocado toast on the back burner and give your followers something new and unexpected. The possibilities are truly endless, and strawberry toast may just be your next go-to meal.
