The 10 Most Underrated Athens Restaurants

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Ohio U chapter.

Everyone at OU knows all about the iconic uptown Athens restaurants, like Bagel Street, Big Mama’s, and Casa Nueva. But what happens when you decide to eat somewhere that’s not Court Street? And no, I’m not talking about USD.

These restaurants are the most underrated Athens food spots. We’ve tried all of them, and we’re here to tell you that they’re all delicious. Note: these are in no particular order

1. West Side Wingery

9 N. Shafer St. Athens, Ohio

Just take a minute to wipe the drool off of your face. You good? West Side Wingery is the place to go if you want fresh and local ingredients. Owned by the same people who own Fluff, WSW offers a varying menu- you can get anything from tacos to wings to pulled pork sandwiches. Run, go right now. It’s so good.

2. Larry’s Dawg House

410 W. Union St. Athens, Ohio

The most obvious thing you notice when you pull up is that Larry’s is old. I mean, hasn’t changed a thing since the day they opened in 1972 old. This classic piece of Americana makes you feel right at home with their delicious hot dogs, onion rings, and fries. If you’re lucky, THE Larry himself will even serve you. Check them out, especially on Weenie Wednesdays, for a $.99 dog.

3. Kiser’s Barbeque

1002 E. State St. Athens, Ohio

Have you ever seen anything so beautiful in your life? I didn’t think so. Kiser’s Barbeque on East State has, in my opinion, the best pulled pork, chicken, brisket, and ribs in Athens. Their sauces make even the most picky barbeque eaters’ mouths drool. And the best part- it’s so inexpensive. Try it right now, I know you’re hungry.

4. Miller’s Chicken

235 W. State St. Athens, Ohio

Do you ever crave fried chicken but you don’t know where to go? Let me tell you a secret: Miller’s Chicken is so good it should be illegal. Featuring bone in, tenders, and a plethora of classic sides, Miller’s is your one stop shop for the best fried chicken in Athens, Ohio.

5. O’Betty’s Red Hot!

15 W. State St. Athens, Ohio

Located uptown, this one is so often forgotten about because you have to actually turn the corner off of Court Street to get to it. O’Betty’s menu of fancy dogs is the perfect thing for the adventurous but not too adventurous, because after all, it is hot dogs and fries. Bonus- their theme of burlesque dancers keeps the conversation going. They’re even open late, thank god.

6. Souvlaki’s

9 W. State St. Athens, Ohio

This one is right next door to O’Betty’s but it’s food options are a world away (so corny, so sorry). Souvlaki’s is a popular drunk food spot, but I really recommend you try it while sober- it’s so good. Try their Mediterranean fare, or even their corn dogs, because lets be honest, it’s all so delicious.

7. McHappy’s Bake Shoppe

384 Richland Ave. Athens, Ohio

Donuts? In Athens? Oh yes, that’s right. The best donuts in Athens aren’t at Tim Horton’s, they’re at McHappy’s Donuts on Richland Avenue. They have such an assortment, you’ll never get tired. But let’s be real, would you ever get tired of donuts?

8. Gran Ranchero

979 E. State St. Athens, Ohio

Take Taco Tuesday to the next level and try this amazing spot out on East State. With bomb ass margs, mouth watering enchilladas, and some super tasty chips and salsa, you are sure to have a good time. Plus, when you get done, visit Petland next door to play with the pups. It’s a win win.

9. Village Bakery

268 E. State Street

Who doesn’t love brunch and fresh brewed coffee? Village Bakery proudly uses local ingredients, including their coffee that is roasted in Athens, every single day. Treat yourself and stop by for a baked good today.

10. OMG! Rotisserie

139 Columbus Rd. Athens, Ohio

OMG is right. This delicious soul food spot will get you hooked and keep you satisfied with its seemingly endless array of amazing sides. And look at the star of that meal- that chicken is to die for, and you know it. Next time you see their food truck on campus, be sure to stop by and try it out.

Did you see something new? Even if you didn’t you know you should go show these underrated Athens eateries some love right now.
