The Perfect Harry Potter Themed Snacks for Movie Night

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Cal Poly chapter.

Is there anything better than the sound of Hedwig’s Theme gliding through the air as you sink into the couch, wrapped in a blanket? Every once in a while, thousands of Harry Potter fans, myself included, get comfortable and settle in for a movie marathon, ready to experience the wonder again. And what do all movie marathons require? Food. It seems almost unimaginable to be able to sit in front of the TV for hours without any kind of snack. For my fellow Potterheads, I’ve put together a list of the perfect Harry Potter themed snacks to make your movie marathon even more magic

Every good movie needs a villain, and now you can eat Harry Potter’s. These brownie filled little Voldys are perfect for snacking and for taking your frustration out on every time Voldemort pulls some shit on screen. If we have to sit here and be the Muggles we are, we might as well have fun biting off Voldemort’s tiny nose-less head

Little Voldemorts

Difficulty:BeginnerPrep time: 20 minutesCook time: 30 minutesTotal time: 50 minutesServings:15 servings

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Make brownie mix as directed on package. (Add the water, eggs, and oil. Then mix together, pour into cake pan, and bake for 25-30 minutes).

  2. In a saucepan, heat up the white chocolate and sweetened condensed milk on low heat until combined and smooth. Remove from heat and vanilla extract. Put mixture in the freezer for 10 minutes.

  3. When the brownies are done, use your hands to mold/form round cone-like bodies about 2 inches tall for the base out of brownie. Stick a toothpick down through the center to act as a connective piece for the head.

  4. Once the condensed milk and chocolate mixture is cool, scoop and smooth it into balls about 1 inch in diameter. For best look, try to shape it as a head would look, pointier on the bottom.

  5. Stick the head onto the body by pushing it down onto the toothpick sticking out of the body.

  6. Use another toothpick and black food coloring to add red eyes and slits for a nose.

#spoontip: You can make black food coloring by combining equal parts of red, green, and blue.

What every Harry Potter movie marathon should have is a slice of where it all began. As the clock strikes midnight marking Harry Potter’s 11th birthday, Hagrid busts down the door into the tiny hut on the rock to tell him, “yer a wizard, Harry” and gives him a homemade, sat-on cake. And at this moment, didn’t we all wish we could be there in that hut, having a piece of that cake Dudley not-so-sneakily scarfed down? Now, as you watch The Sorcerer’s Stone, you can.

Harry’s 11th Birthday Cake

Difficulty:BeginnerPrep time: 15 minutesCook time: 30 minutesTotal time: 45 minutesServings:15 servings

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Prepare cake as according to the back of the box and bake.

  2. Combine the cream cheese frosting with 3 drops of red food coloring to make a medium pink.

  3. Once the cake is cool, cover it in an even layer of pink frosting, making some waves on the surface with your knife.

  4. With the green icing pen, write crookedly on the top, u0022HAPPEE BIRTHDAE HARRY,u0022 one word under the next.

  5. Natasha Agharkar

Drag a knife or toothpick down from between the P and E of u0022HAPPEE,u0022 to between the H and D of u0022BIRTHDAE,u0022 and finally between H and A of u0022HARRYu0022 to make it look a bit cracked.

While we can’t exactly join in on their fun (though I’ve heard there are Quidditch teams on college campuses), we can still partake by eating their equipment.

Golden Snitches

Difficulty:BeginnerPrep time: 20 minutesCook time: 5 minutesTotal time: 25 minutesServings:25 servings

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Rub butter along the insides of a large bowl and add the pack of marshmallows. Heat up in the microwave in 45 second intervals until they are melted.

  2. Natasha Agharkar

A cup at a time, add the Rice Krispies to the bowl and mix well (make sure to grease the spoon so it doesn’t stick).

  3. Roll the mixture into balls about 2 inches in diameter and roll in the sugar sprinkles. The goal is for the outside to look yellow/gold.

  4. Heat up some white chocolate and fill into a piping bag. On a sheet of parchment paper, pipe out enough sets of wings to match the number of balls and set to cool in the fridge or freezer.

  5. Natasha Agharkar

Remove after a few minutes once the wings are firm. With the rest of the melted piping chocolate, attach the wings to the sides of each Rice Krispies treat balls and let set.

#spoontip: You can also just add yellow food coloring to granulated sugar if you don’t have sprinkles.

These little brooms are a refreshing taste of savory compared to the sweets many seem to crave during marathons. They might not be as in shape as the Nimbus 2000 or Firebolt, but I guarantee they taste better.

After swallowing a few brooms, I’m sure you’ll be more than capable of finding the Golden Snitch. 150 points to your house! Taste the victory!

Quidditch Broomsticks

Difficulty:BeginnerPrep time: 5 minutesCook time: minutesTotal time: 5 minutesServings:8 servings

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Cut the string cheese into four equal pieces horizontally.

  2. Natasha Agharkar

On one end of each piece, make small cuts along the stick and then turn 90° and repeat so that you’ve created a frayed look at the bottom. to make it look better, use your hands to soften the edges and splay them out like an old broom.

  3. Push a stick pretzel gently into the non-frayed end of the cheese so that it stays together.

  4. Natasha Agharkar

to finish the look, tie a chive around the u0022baseu0022 of the broomstick, around the cheese closer to the side with the pretzel.

As you dive into The Goblet of Fire, pull out your Mad Eye(s). Or maybe wait, if the sight of seeing fake Moody’s eye spin on screen puts your appetite off. Either way, your fellow marathoners will be impressed with the amount of effort it looks like you put into the truffle eyeballs. It’s a Harry Potter themed snack the real Alastor Moody would be proud of.

In a saucepan on low heat, combine chocolate chips and the condensed milk, then remove from heat when smooth.

  2. Add the vanilla extract and then set the mixture in the freezer for about 6-8 minutes.

  3. Once you take it back out, roll the mixture into little balls around an inch in diameter.

  4. Roll them firmly in the coconut powder/shavings, making sure it sticks to all sides and gets packed it.

  5. With the blue icing pen, fill in a circle for the iris of the truffle eye, and then create a pupil in the center of that using a black icing pen or food coloring.

  6. Natasha Agharkar

Put them back in the freezer until they’re almost ready to serve so they don’t start to get too soft.

Now for a real dish that the characters actually enjoyed themselves, since the first train ride to Hogwarts: pumpkin pasties. If you think about it in terms of food, which I do, these are really a part of the beginning to Harry and Ron’s bromance. Splitting this Harry Potter themed snack with your best friend as you watch is the perfect declaration of friendship.

  5. Natasha Agharkar

Bake them for 12 minutes on a pan lines with parchment paper at 400° F.

Would a Harry Potter themed snack list ever be complete without good old Butterbeer? I used to dream of walking into Rosmerta’s with all my magical friends—I was so sure I’d get my letter—and hanging out with some Butterbeers, talking about the latest spell gone wrong in Flitwick’s class.

But alas, as I got older, I realized no letter was coming. I would not be heading off to Rosmerta’s anytime soon. Luckily, we can make it at home and instead just enviously watch characters on screen.
