7 Snacks For The Perfect Beachside Picnic

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BU chapter.

I’ve been waiting months to break out my swimsuit and suntan lotion after a brutal winter, and the heat has finally arrived. For me, summer is synonymous with one thing: the beach. Laying in the sun all day beachside is much needed after the stress of spring semester. My friends and I love to camp out at the beach all day so, naturally, we bring a bunch of snacks to hydrate and sustain us. Here are some of my favorites to bring for the perfect beachside picnic.

1. Homemade Fruit Popsicles

Homemade popsicles are the perfect healthy, refreshing summer dessert. You can choose whatever fruits you like most, just make sure to keep the popsicles in an icy cooler. Try out some of these great recipes next time you hit the beach.

2. Chips and Salsa

Chips and salsa are delicious any time of the year, but summer is the perfect opportunity to dip your chips in a more elevated, refreshing version. These watermelon and key lime salsas are perfect for any outdoor summer picnic.

3. Agua Fresca

If you’re looking for a refined sugar-free summer drink that is still sweet and refreshing, agua fresca is a must. It’s a healthier alternative to soda and lemonade that’s made with fresh fruit and agave. Strawberry lemon and peach watermelon are two great flavor combinations to try on your next beachside picnic. (Oh, and if you’re feeling boozy, you can add a splash of tequila to make a refreshing cocktail–we won’t tell anyone).

#SpoonTip: Put your drinks in a double wall insulated water bottle to keep them cool all day!

4. Homemade Granola Bars

Crunchy, chewy, or dipped in chocolate, granola bars are an easy, delicious snack to bring to the beach. They’re also so easy to personalize and make on your own, so the opportunities are endless. Try these PB chocolate bars, these fruit and yogurt bars, or let your imagination run wild and customize your own.

5. Summer Salads

Salads are the perfect dish to customize according to the season, and summer salads are my personal favorite. With refreshing ingredients like berries, watermelon, avocado, and mango, you really can’t go wrong. They’re the perfect dish to put together and bring to the beach, just make sure to keep the dressing on the side until you’re ready to eat it. Need some inspiration? Here are 15 summer salad ideas that are sure to satisfy your craving.

6. Apples and Nut Butter

Apple slices are crisp, refreshing, and even better when dipped in your favorite nut butter. With all of the delicious flavored nut butters on the market now, from red velvet to tiramisu, why would you just choose plain old PB?

7. Summer Rolls

Summer rolls are perfect for your beachside picnic. They’re incredibly fresh, crunchy, and customizable. Try these melon basil rolls if you’re feeling something fruity or these sriracha lentil rolls if you’re feeling something a little bit more filling.

The next time you decide to picnic at the beach, be sure to choose one of these delicious options to satisfy your summer cravings.
