I could eat dessert for all three meals. From red velvet cupcakes to Belgian waffles with ice cream, I love sugary foods. I can’t get enough of them. Being in favor of all things sugar, I’ve found that a lot of my favorite savory foods taste just as delicious in a sweet setting and, well, everybody could use a little more sugar in their lives.
1. Grilled Cheese
Don’t get me wrong, a classic, savory all-American grilled cheese is absolutely divine. But, have you ever had a grilled cheese between two slices of pumpkin spice bread? Or pound cake? These four recipes show you how to sweeten your grilled cheese game, with ingredients like apples, chocolate chips, maple syrup, and brown sugar.
2. Sweet Potato
Oatmeal is my go to breakfast in the morning. It gives me enough energy to get through to lunch, and I love how I can top it with different things. However, all that changed when I found this sweet potato breakfast bowl recipe. I’ve typically only had sweet potato roasted with savory spices for dinner, but this is my new favorite way to use the vegetable. Plus, it’s a great low-carb replacement for oatmeal and full of beta-carotene and vitamin B6.
3. Bacon
Ah bacon, a classic American breakfast food. For the past few years, though, people have being using smoky breakfast meat in sweet, innovative ways. From pumpkin spice bacon donuts to bacon-infused ice cream, bacon has become the new complimentary component in a variety of desserts. Honestly, it’s giving the classic bacon-and-eggs duo a run for its money
4. Avocado
Avocado toast is great, but have you ever tried avocado popsicles? How about avocado fudge brownies? With their creamy texture and mild flavor, avocados are a perfect component to add to a variety of sweet desserts. These four recipes will make you rethink the way that you use this trendy food.
5. Bagels and Cream Cheese
With chocolate chip pancakes and whipped cream-covered waffles, dessert has always been acceptable for breakfast. So, why not start your morning off with one of these six candy bar inspired cream cheeses on your bagel? Yeah, lox and veggie flavored cream cheeses are great, but sometimes you need a little sugar rush to get you through the day.
6. Tofu
Before trying tofu as a dessert, I had only ever eaten it on savory sandwiches, or in grain bowls. However, much like an avocado’s, tofu’s texture is what makes it an underrated winner in the dessert department. When blended together with sugar and chocolate, cinnamon, lemon, and more, it ends up smooth and silky. It works especially well in vegan desserts, like in this chocolate pudding or this chocolate pie.
7. Sriracha
Okay, hear me out. Sriracha is smokey, spicy, and already just a tiny bit sweet. The heat from the sauce in combination with a sweet component is surprisingly delicious. A rich chocolate flavor in particular pairs well with the sauce, like in this Sriracha chocolate and dulce de leche tart. If you’re really feeling daring, try this recipe for Sriracha paprika macarons.
So go ahead, mix some Hershey’s chocolate into your cream cheese and throw some apple slices into your grilled cheese. At least the sweet potato breakfast bowl is kind of healthy.
