Slow Cooker Apple Pie Filling Takes Just 15 Minutes to Throw Together

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UVA chapter.

There’s no ignoring that winter has arrived, and I’m sure all of my cold-loathing pals are dreading the next few months as much as I am. However, uncomfortable temps can only be combatted with warm comfort food, and what could be sweeter than multi-purpose apple pie filling?

In my daily struggle to balance my love for nutrition and dessert, I stumbled upon this healthy, homemade recipe that will put your grandma’s to shame. It’s simple and nutritious, letting you have your “pie,” and eat it too at any time of the day.

Instructions

  1. Sam Brosnahan

Dice all of the apples and sprinkle them with lemon juice to prevent browning. Add them to your slow cooker.

  2. Sam Brosnahan

Whisk together the cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, water, and maple syrup until the cornstarch has completely dissolved. Cook the mixture over medium heat and stir constantly for about 5 minutes, or until the mixture begins to thicken.

  3. Sam Brosnahan

Pour the mixture over the apples.

  4. Sam Brosnahan

Stir until every apple is coated, place the cover on the slow cooker, and cook on high for 3 hours, or until the apples are tender.

  5. Sam Brosnahan

Enjoy the hot apple pie filling right out of the Crock Pot, or let the apples cool to room temperature before transferring into tupperware. These apples are incredible alone, but even better on top of ice cream, oatmeal, crepes, waffles, or pancakes.

This cozy recipe truly is as easy as pie, and gives you the perfect excuse to finally use that slow cooker your mom bought for you last Christmas. If you’re looking to up your apple game, or just enjoy a hot bowl of happiness, this dish will leave you feeling  “apple-y” ever after.

Peanut butter, The Hoos, puppies, salads, and John Mayer are enough to get me by.
