TikTok has taken the world by storm as the home to all of the latest trends in fashion, dancing, and, most importantly, cooking. Many easy recipes or cooking hacks have gone viral, making everyone excited to spice up their meals and try something new. With so many TikTok food trends going on, it can be tough to figure out which ones are worth buying the ingredients for—but no worries! I can help you out with that. Here are five food trends that are actually worth trying in your kitchen.
Baked Feta Pasta
If you have TikTok and haven’t heard of this recipe, do you really use the app? This viral recipe had everyone running to their closest grocery store for a block of feta cheese to recreate the simple, yet delicious pasta dish.
Simply add your block of feta cheese to the center of a baking dish and surround it with cherry tomatoes, topping the entire dish with salt, black pepper, and olive oil. After roasting in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 minutes, a smooth, creamy feta will mix perfectly with the roasted tomatoes to make a scrumptious sauce for your favorite pasta noodle.
But where exactly did this recipe come from? Well, like many other TikTok food trends, it began with a dish found outside of the U.S. Originally called UuniFetaPasta (uuni meaning ‘oven’ in Finnish), this recipe was first shared in February 2019 by a Finnish food blogger, Jenni Häyrinen. It finally reached its popularity in the States when TikTokers Mackenzie Smith and Yumna Jawad took to their accounts and posted their own versions of the dish. Millions of views and shares later, grocery stores were running out of feta cheese. However you plan on making it, whether it’s veganized or with added spices, this is one recipe you’ll definitely need to add to the list to try.
Baked Oats
While it’s no secret that oatmeal recipes have dominated TikTok food trends, baked oats have recently gained a lot of attention. Baking oats, instead of the traditional stovetop method, results in a thicker consistency similar to that of cookie dough. One recipe by The Bakeaholic on TikTok went viral for tasting so much like cookie dough that viewers couldn’t believe they could enjoy the sweet taste and soft texture of a warm, freshly-baked cookie alongside the many health benefits of oatmeal.
Based off of the recipe posted, first blend together 2/3 cup oats, 1 banana, 1 teaspoon honey, 2/3 cup milk (or any non-dairy alternative), and 1 teaspoon baking powder. Then pour the mixture into a microwave-safe dish and top with chocolate chips. Microwave for about 2 minutes and let cool before enjoying.
#SpoonTip: Make sure to use a slightly bigger dish or skillet to avoid any spillage in the microwave!
Tortilla Wrap
With a hack as simple as this one, I’m surprised it hasn’t trended before. This viral food trend has been recreated many times and can include whatever ingredients you’d like to make the perfect snack, lunch, or even dessert. To recreate this hack, grab a tortilla and make a half slice starting from the center out to one edge. Separate each ingredient of your choosing into 4 equal parts of the tortilla. Then, fold the tortilla upward, starting at the split you made, then to the right, and finally downward to complete the triangle shape.
For breakfast, add eggs, avocado, cheese, and a hash brown to your wrap. For a quick healthy snack, add veggies, hummus spread, turkey (or tofu), and spinach. For dessert, spread peanut butter or Nutella and add bananas with cinnamon and chocolate chips to satisfy your sweet tooth. There are so many ways to personalize your tortilla fold—the possibilities are endless!
#SpoonTip: Try adding ingredients like beef (or black beans), cheese, sour cream, lettuce, and tomato, and placing your wrap on the stovetop to simplify an at-home Crunchwrap Supreme.
Greek Yogurt Bagels
While bagels are a heavenly choice for starting off the day on a great note, some prefer an alternative with cleaner ingredients. You can still enjoy a warm, soft bagel without all the guilt by using this simple, easy-to-follow recipe for greek yogurt bagels. The Modern Nonna posted a recipe that calls for just 4-5 ingredients and totals up to just 135 calories per bagel!
To recreate this recipe, first preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. In a bowl, add 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1.5 teaspoons baking powder, and 1 teaspoon salt. Once mixed, add in 1 cup yogurt (use Greek yogurt for more protein) and mix together using your hands until a sticky dough-like ball forms. Flour the dough on a flat surface and knead until no longer sticky. Cut the dough into four equal pieces and roll each piece out into a loop to form the famous bagel shape. Place each bagel onto a baking sheet with parchment paper and brush on egg wash (1 egg mixed with 1 tablespoon water). Sprinkle on your favorite seasonings (Trader Joe’s Everything But the Bagel Seasoning is an excellent choice) and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes.
Ramen
This trend recently hit the TikTok trending page and is definitely one you’ll need to try the next time you’re out of ideas for dinner. Food52 comes at us with an easy recipe to follow with ingredients you’re sure to find in your kitchen—and it only takes 10 minutes to make! Start by cooking ramen noodles in a pot of boiling water until al dente, and in a separate skillet, add 1 tablespoon butter, minced garlic, and soy sauce. Add in 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and as many red pepper flakes as you’d like. Toss your ramen noodles into the pan and add in your egg, letting it cook on the side before mixing it with the noodles. Top your noodles with sesame seeds and chopped scallions for a delicious finish to this noodle dish.
#SpoonTip: To level up this ramen dish, add tofu, bok choy, or peanuts for some extra protein and flavor. If you’re looking to cook with healthier ingredients, use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce and opt for sesame oil instead of butter.
Whether it’s a new technique to make your morning oats or a simple noodle recipe, I hope you recreate one of these TikTok food trends. With simple steps to follow and ingredients you can find in your kitchen, these recipes are definitely worth trying.
