You Have to Go to This Hip Allston Sports Bar This Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BU chapter.

Down a long stretch of road and placed right next to an auto-shop is the restaurant, Lulu’s Allston is obviously not realizing their true potential. I found this small sports bar after looking up to find a new food place to hit up on a Friday. The portion of the food is not only proportionate to the amount that they charge you, but the service there is credible as well.

So I dragged my roommate along with me to find this place down in Allston. This restaurant is at a relatively easy location for the younger generation, around 20s to 30s, to hang out. There is various seating arrangements, from sitting at the bar, to being seated on cushioned benches along the wall. For my fellow sport fanatics out there, this is the place for you. There are six TVs placed around giving you the perfect view of the latest game on ESPN no matter where you sit.

Once we sat down we browsed the menu quickly before ordering.

We got the ranch tots with garlic mayo as a starter, and they were delicious. They had a fresh-out-of-the-fryer type of crisp that covered the potato. They came in this small chum-bucket which held about 10 pieces or so. This may sound little, but trust me, when you’re eating and talking and drinking, those pieces can get you full real quick. When I took my first bite, I thought I was in heaven. The garlic mayo was smooth and added just the right amount of garlicky taste to the tots.

For a main course, I had the Thai Quinoa Black Bean Burger which was unbelievable, to say the least. It was served to me on a silver tray which reminded of a diner food, but better quality. For someone who isn’t a vegetarian, or really doesn’t like vegetables, I can tell you that you can hardly tell that this isn’t a real burger. It might be a little softer than a chicken or turkey burger, but it definitely doesn’t subtract any taste. The bread was soft, and the cheese melted perfectly around the edges of the burger, forming a nice cheesy coating over the black bean quinoa.

The “meaty” part itself offered a crispy texture and also had a slight spicy kick to it, which was probably due to it being a Thai burger. One of the best things was that this burger wasn’t salty, which is great because I’ve had burgers before where the chef had overdone it on the salt because they feel they have to make up for it being a veggie burger. The hand cut fries were nicely made, but I do have to admit that they tasted a little soggy, and not as hot and fresh as I had hoped. Nonetheless, this dish was still great to eat and certainly filling.

My roommate Maggie ordered the “Your Way” from the Eggs and Entrees section. With this, you could order your eggs to be cooked anyway, and have a choice of bacon or house roasted turkey with cajun tots and Texas toast.

She found the toast to be a little bland, and it would have been nicer to have some sort of spread that wasn’t just butter. The eggs were nicely cooked, not overdone or watery, and had a nice touch of pepper and salt on them. She admitted that she is a big fan of the tater tots. Lastly, the turkey was nice, but again, a little bland. A suggestion of cranberry sauce or maybe a little side of gravy would be nice to add something to the dish.

Lastly, what I will probably consider the greatest part of our entire meal was the dessert. The Chef Donut Holes with warm dark chocolate on the side were so finely made, but also aesthetically appealing. They were obviously freshly made because of the how warm they were on the inside. The powered sugar on the outside was unique because it wasn’t just like a regular roll-the-dough in sugar type of donut, but rather the sugar was thick and clumped together slightly. It added some texture to the overall donut.

The inside of the donut also has a different texture to it. It has some sort of bread-like feel to it. Nonetheless, it was still such a nice finish to a savoury lunch.

If you’re on chilling at home on the weekend, bored of the dining hall food, or just looking for a place to go, this is definitely a restaurant to hit up. It’s has a variety of food, it’s not expensive for a college students, and it appeals to the sports fanatics as well. What more could you ask for?

I was born in London, grew up in Singapore, but my dad is Irish and my mum is Chinese. It's something I am incredibly proud of. I am an only child, but I grew up with several dogs (7 dogs at one point), 9 cats, and I've had guinea pigs, hamsters and turtles. Guess you could say that my parents are animal lovers. I developed a love for photography my sophomore year of high school. Food was one of the most common things for me to shoot, and pretty much where I started. I was sports editor for my yearbook my senior year and so I became quite in touch with journalism writing, and I loved the design aspect to it as well. I hope to one day work for a magazine company so I can write about lifestyles, or the latest trends and foods.
