If you’ve been to New Haven and haven’t had a square donut, then you haven’t really been to New Haven. Tony’s Square Donuts, (formally known as Orangeside Donuts, the “home of the square-cut donut”) has rebranded and relocated, changing its name and main storefront to 24 Whitney Ave. These unique donuts are unrivaled in flavor and are attractive alternatives to New Haven’s classic sweet treats like froyo, cupcakes and ice-cream.

In addition to Tony’s (yes, the owner is named Tony) new storefront location, you can find his donuts roaming the streets on the Orangeside food trucks and at various retail locations like Durfee’s, Elm City Market and Orangeside on Temple. The truck can sometimes be found during the day near campus hubs such WLH and The Whale.

You can also reserve the truck for a special event; from large parties to intimate celebrations, Tony’s Donut truck enables you to customize flavors and personalize your special day.

If you don’t have a space to host the truck but still want the donuts, Tony’s also offers special events and catering options. The famous donuts make delicious study break snacks, delectable birthday treats and divine brunch additions. Call (1-844-Get-donuts) to let Tony’s satisfy your donut desires.

When you walk into Tony’s store on Whitney, you are immediately hit by a mouthwatering aroma of powdered sugar and fried goodness. The main retail location makes 12 different donut flavors daily, ranging from the good ol’ Old Fashioned to Almond Butter Crunch, a Tony’s original.

Some more unique creations include the Cannoli Donut, Cocoa Puffs Donut and even a Fruity Pebbles Donut. Every donut is flaky and doughy, and I have yet to sample a disappointing donut. A few of our favorite flavors include Blueberry Maple Crunch, Toasted Coconut with a Bavarian Creme Filling and Powdered Cinnamon Old Fashioned Cake Donut.

The Blueberry Maple Crunch packs the flavor of a muffin top into a donut, creating an irresistible texture and taste, reinventing the classic breakfast item. The bavarian creme filling in the Toasted Coconut Donut keeps the donut moist, and the square shape produces the perfect donut to creme ratio.

With a typical round donut, fillings are hard to enjoy as the center oozes out, and you have to gobble up the filling as quickly as possible, but with Tony’s square donuts, the creme is perfectly distributed and stays put, allowing you to enjoy the contrasting textures in every bite. You can never go wrong with any of Tony’s cake donuts, from plain, to chocolate covered powdered sugar; they offer the ideal balance of crunchy outer shell and buttery inner goodness.

If you’re looking for a healthier option, Tony has something for you too! That is, if fruit-filled donuts meet your health standards. The Strawberry Powdered Jelly Donut is simply delectable, and it offers some fruit, so the donut part doesn’t even count right? If you’re actually on a health kick though, Tony can help you meet your macros with his protein donut.

From the dough shaping to the frying, you can do it all. Next time you’re in the mood for a sweet treat or an indulgent breakfast, head on over to Tony’s Square Donuts for a delicious experience.
