Fat Sal’s, a local Westwood eatery known for its large sandwiches stuffed with items such as fries, mozeralla sticks and onion rings is soon introducing a revamped menu. Where their current, Guy Fieri endorsed menu features the classic fat sandwiches and fries with various toppings (think Carne Asada and pepperoni pizza) the new menu is said to include salads, acai bowls and a focus on locally grown superfoods.
“This change was long overdue,” says manager Greg. “We were trying to come up with a new sandwich idea and all anyone could think of was bacon and jalapeno poppers. I mean, we’re not thirteen anymore and we need a menu that fits the city and its trends.” Line cook Lucas approves of the changes, “our customers are all these drunk and high kids, stumbling in at two in the morning. They need nutrition man, antioxidants and vitamins, not something that’s going to leave them feeling like shit in the morning.”
So what should we expect from this new menu? Well fat sandwiches are out. “I refuse to put anymore chicken tender or fries in a sandwich,” says Lucas, “I’m not some stoned kid in a Youtube video.” The new menu will instead focus on healthy and light foods. “Think natural, think nutritious,” says Greg. The menu will predominantly be based on salads with different locally sourced and organic ingredients. “There will be a lot of customisation, we want people to make these their own,” Greg adds. Beyond this the menu will also offer fruit and acai bowls. Will there still be Sandwiches? “Yes,” Lucas nods, “but we’re reimagining them, we’ve been playing with Gluten free breads and vegan substitutes, lots of good stuff.”
Students have responsed with surprise and in some cases outrage. Fourth year Tom Park chimes in, “I don’t know dude, I’m all for eating your veggies but thats not whý I go to Fat Sal’s.” Other’s like third year Lizz are more vocal, “If the Fat Banh Miki leaves Westwood, so will I.” Lizz is currently campaigning against the menu changes with the slogan ‘Make Sals Fat Again.’ Some, on the other hand, are welcoming the change. Megann Parker, third year and Pi Kappa Why member claims, “my friends are always going to Fat Sals after parties. If the new menu has Kale chips I think I might to as well.”
Despite some upset customers, Fat Sals is going ahead with the change. The new menu will launch on April 18th. Lucas says, “we want it set up in time for the surge we get on 4/20.”
