Hispanic Heritage Month spans from September 15 to October 15, and there are so many ways to celebrate Latinx and Hispanic culture. You can attend a festival, buy from Latinx-owned businesses, and even support Latinx content creators online. There are so many amazing Latinx and Hispanic creators that share their culture through food by posting content like recipes and cooking tutorials. 

If you dig below the surface, you’ll realize that there is much more behind these recipes than the food they produce. The stories behind them, many of them spanning back multiple generations, is what’s really important, especially as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Here are some Latinx food content creators that are working hard to celebrate their culture through food. 

1. Jenny Martinez (@jennymartinezzz)

Jenny Martinez is a best selling cookbook author, founder of the kitchenware brand Mesa Mia, and a popular food content creator. She was born in Mexico but moved to Los Angeles at age four. Despite this, she stayed extremely in touch with her Mexican roots and began learning her mother’s authentic recipes at 13 years old. Now, she has over 3 million followers on TikTok and shares all different kinds of Mexican recipes, ranging from traditional dishes to more modern-day recipes.

2. Omi Hopper (@cookingconomi)

Omi Hopper, a.k.a cookingconomi, was born in Puerto Rico, but moved to Rhode Island when she was 11. She credits food as the reason she was able to stay connected with her family on the island. As a contestant on Hulu’s Next Level Chef, she shared authentic Puerto Rican recipes, including one inspired by her grandmother. On TikTok, she frequently posts recipes in Spanish, sharing authentic dishes such as pasteles, bistec encebollado, and relleno de papa. 

3. Ana Regalado (@saltycocina)

Ana Regalado, the woman behind @saltycocina, is TikTok’s honorary Mexican grandmother. Ana had always had a passion for authentic Mexican cooking, but when the pandemic hit, she felt inspired to start sharing her love with the public and posting cooking videos on TikTok. With heavy influence from her Mexican heritage, Ana shares authentic recipes that anyone could follow and replicate.

4. Myrna Dahianna Gomez (@_cookingwitd)

Myrna Dahianna Gomez, a.k.a cookingwitd, is a Dominican American from New York City. Growing up, Myrna used to help her family cook at their Dominican restaurant that was actually run out of a small apartment in New York. She credits this as the reason she loves to cook so much. On her TikTok, she shares Dominican recipes, including carne de res frita and pollo guisado. She also puts a spin on other popular Latin recipes, teaching viewers how to cook it the “Dominican way.”

5. Alejandra Tapia (@nanajoe19)

Alejandra Tapia is a Mexican-American residing in California. With over 6 million TikTok followers, Alejandra’s account first gained popularity because of her vlogs showcasing what she packs her family members for lunch. These lunches range from classic American foods like BLT sandwiches to more traditional Latin food like pupusas. They all look so mouth watering. Can you pack me lunch too Alejandra?

Jazlyn Resendez gives her Mexican mother all the credit when it comes to her amazing cooking skills. On her TikTok, Jazlyn shares favorite recipes from her childhood, quick dinner ideas, and creative lunch dishes. Despite being of Mexican heritage, Jazlyn shares recipes from all parts of Latin America.

Columbian-American Maria Legarda, better known as Miss Legarda, is constantly putting a twist on traditional Latin American recipes. From buffalo chicken empanadas to pumpkin spice arroz con leche, Maria’s expertise when it comes to Latin American cuisine can take on any recipe. Plus, she also reviews restaurants and fast food outside of her own kitchen.

8. Suigeneris (@heyimsuie)

Chef Suie, a.k.a @heyimsuie on TikTok, is a self-proclaimed Mexican American chef, as well as musical artist. When he’s not in the recording studio, he’s in the kitchen cooking up unique Mexican dishes. His tutorials range from sweet to savory dishes, like matcha horchata and Mexican candy to chicharrón egg rolls and elote street dogs.

Ady and Cici are a pair of Mexican American sisters who come together to make absolute magic in the kitchen. Seriously, every single one of their TikToks is making my stomach grumble. Ady and Cici are always sure to include a detailed list of ingredients in their captions, ensuring that anyone can recreate their Mexican delicacies.

TikToker Kaila Calderon is prepared to teach you how to cook authentic Latin American food step by step. Whether it’s empanadas, discada, or choriqueso, Kaila has got you covered. She’s truly an expert when it comes to Mexican dishes.

If you want to learn how to cook Latin American food but have no idea where to start, consider learning from TikToker Ana Nelson. Not only does she demonstrate how to cook more complicated Latin dishes, but she also teaches the basics, such as making flour tortillas. She makes her recipes simple enough that anyone can do it.

12. Pizquita de Sal (@pizcitadesal)

TikToker @pizcitadesal’s main purpose as a first generation Latina is to leave behind authentic recipes for her kids. Thankfully, she documents these recipes on her public account, so we can all learn a thing or two about Mexican cooking. She has over 100 recipes posted, so there’s no doubt her kids will have endless delicious recipes to choose from. 

Amanda Brucculeri is the fall editorial intern for Spoon University, where she covers food news and emerging trends. Beyond Spoon University, Amanda works as the podcast editor for Boston University News Service, where she oversees a team of reporters covering news through audio. She also writes for the city column of The Buzz Magazine, and is the host of a true crime radio show on WTBU student radio. She is currently a junior at Boston University, majoring in journalism with a minor in public relations. In her free time, she enjoys curating playlists, trying new restaurants, and watching movies.
