Cooking Mama’s Rainbow Grilled Cheese Recipe: Does It Actually Work?

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at USFSP chapter.

Back in the early 2000s, I was a heavy gamer. From Gameboy Advance SP to the Nintendo Switch, I was a fiend for video games such as Super Smash Bros, Wii Sports Resort, and Cooking Mama.

Cooking Mama, the Japanese simulation-style cooking game, was first released nearly 15 years ago on the Nintendo DS (I know, right?). It has since sold over 12 million copies worldwide and has spread to four different platforms, the latest being the Nintendo Switch.

I recently got the opportunity to play Cooking Mama: Cookstar on my friend’s Nintendo Switch, and boy, was I filled with nostalgia.

I quickly grabbed the controller and flicked through the array of new and unfamiliar recipes. There were galaxy milkshakes, mochi, even vegetable terrine, but I eventually fell upon one that piqued my interest the most: a rainbow grilled cheese.

Because I had not played since I was 14, I was extremely excited and antsy to create this recipe and be chastised by the fastidious chef for messing up her recipe.

However, once I began the game, I wondered if it was actually possible to make this in real life. Now 21 and living on my own, I thought to myself, “Who’s going to tell me that I can’t try?”

So, after a quick trip to the grocery store, I decided to do it.

Once I got home, I pulled up Cooking Mama on YouTube and followed her rainbow grilled cheese recipe from start to finish, trying to gain my three stars and refrain from Mama’s freak attacks.

Like always, Mama never let me down.

Instructions

  1. Lauren Wood
Rather than slicing your own bread and grating your own cheese, simply add 1/4 cup of mozzarella cheese to 4 small bowls.
  2. Lauren Wood
Next, add 2 drops of food coloring per bowl and mix. Make sure that each bowl is a different color. For this recipe, I used neon pink, orange, green, and purple.
  3. Lauren Wood
On one slice of potato bread, place each cheese in a vertical row to arrange a rainbow. Use as much cheese as deemed necessary.
  4. Lauren Wood
In a pan on medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of butter. Once the butter has melted, place the sandwich in the pan and turn stove to medium-high heat. Grill until golden brown.
  5. Lauren Wood
Add 1 tablespoon of butter to pan and carefully flip sandwich. Grill until golden brown.

Once grilled on both sides, remove from heat and rest on plate. Then, cut horizontally or diagonally to reveal the cheesy rainbow. Immediately plate and serve. Don’t forget to snap a pic for Mama!

Overall, this was by far one of the cheesiest and most satisfying grilled cheese sandwiches I’ve ever had, and that’s saying something considering it’s one of my favorite college/stress meals.

Not to mention, look at that color.

To say the least, I was extremely happy and surprised at how well Mama’s virtual directions transferred to my small kitchen.

It truly made me feel like I was becoming my very own chef, just like Cooking Mama.

Hi there! My name is Lauren, and I am an aspiring author and food enthusiast. I absolutely LOVE spooky season, so prepare to be scared by the amount of Halloween articles I may post. Thirty hours of my day revolves around Netflix, so I hope this pulls me out of my binge-watching rut.
