The Source in SoCal is Bringing Health into Desserts

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UCSD chapter.

Raw, vegan and healthy are usually not what come to mind when we think of desserts.  However, a small, online bakery called The Source, located in southern California, is dishing out vegan desserts that are free of soy, gluten, and refined sugars.

Owned by Roxanne Golkar and partner Bradly Reitler, the bakery uses local and organic ingredients to put a healthy twist on classic favorites. The power couple hopes to inspire people to choose healthier options while still satisfying cravings for sugar.

How it Got Started

Roxanne and Bradley began their business when they started using the pulp from their almond milk to make desserts. With such an idea, they began making raw cakes, and came up with a delicious yet heathy takes on classic desserts.

Some of these desserts include their famous carrot cakes, cinnamon buns, and brownies—all vegan, raw, and absolutely delicious.

Personal Taste Test of Bliss Balls

They also started making  their famous bliss balls, which tasted like cookie-dough made with ingredient such as nut butters, natural chocolate, and natural sugars. They come in an assortment of flavors and look like assorted colors of raw cookie dough rolled in coconut flakes

These bliss balls surprised me at first bite as I bit into a brownie bliss ball that tasted rich and chocolatey, yet not too sweet. I couldn’t believe how amazing a raw dessert without any artificial ingredients could taste.

They also have came up with a variety of bliss balls, ranging from raspberry flavored ones and limited edition holiday specials, such as pumpkin spice and egg nog for the holidays.

Where They’re Located

The bakery is currenly based on online ordering, but they often sell their goods at local farmers markets. They lay their tables with an assortment of colorful treats that definiltey catch your attention.

Whether vegan, gluten-free, or neither, you and your sweet tooth will most definite be won by Roxanne and Bradly’s vegan desserts. After trying their vegan and raw desserts, you might even rethink what a really satisfying dessert should be.
