Put Starbucks out of Business With This Healthy Dirty Chai Latte

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Sewanee chapter.

If I’m feeling fancy, my go-to caffine fix in the morning is a dirty chai latte, which is a chai latte with an added shot of expresso. I love the taste of the spicy cinammon and frothy milk, but I’m not a fan of the high sugar count. Recent research led me to discover that a Grande Starbucks Chai Latte has 42g of sugar! No thanks. As the saying goes, when life gives you too much sugar, find a healthy alternative, right? And thus the search began for a healthy dirty chai latte.

The Facts

Starbucks drinks sure do taste good, but when I looked up the nutrition facts to my favorite drink I was disappointed. Just one drink contains a whole lot of sugar, which isn’t the best thing for your body in the morning. Manufactured sugar is a source of empty calories, which are calories that lack any nutritional value. In addition, having a lot of sugar in the morning causes sugar crashes later on- not the best for fueling your day.

The Alternative

I came upon a healthy alternative to my dirty chai latte by accident. I was shopping in Sprouts, and while browsing through the milk section my eyes landed on a small carton of chai flavored Rebel Kitchen Mylk. I prefer coconut milk to regular milk (judge me if you want), so this find was a win-win. I could get my coconut milk AND my chai latte fix with one carton!

As an added bonus, all the of the ingredients are organic and simple- the milk is made with organic coconut milk and organic spices. In addition, as opposed to the whopping 42g of sugar in a grande Starbucks Chai Latte, this whole carton of “mylk” has only 25g naturally sourced sugar, and the recipe below only contains about 12g! Here is how I put together my healthy alternative to a Starbucks dirty chai latte with my milk discovery:
