Are you struggling to find good food to eat as a vegetarian on campus? Fear no more— I made a list of the best vegetarian foods at the University of Miami. From breakfast to dinner, I’ve got you covered.
Jamba Juice
Jamba Juice sells a perfect frozen treat, the acai primo bowl, which will satisfy your sweet tooth while cooling you off during those hot Miami days. The acai primo bowl is made of açaí juice, soymilk, blueberries, strawberries and bananas. It is topped with organic granola, fresh bananas, fresh blueberries, coconut and a drizzle of honey.
Tossed
Tossed is a great place to go if you don’t eat meat because you can make any kind of salad you’re in the mood for. I like to add mozzarella and chickpeas as a substitute for meat. If you aren’t in the mood for a salad, Tossed also has a delicious caprice sandwich. It’s made with mozzarella cheese, basil, tomato and extra virgin olive oil.
Hack: The caprice sandwich is typically served cold, but if you ask for it heated the cheese melts and the bread gets crispy.
Sushi Maki
In the pre-prepared case of sushi, Sushi Maki typically offers fishless sushi, such as avocado or cucumber rolls. Order some delicious steamed bao buns and wok-fired udon to complete your meal if you have a few minutes to spare.
Fresh Fusion
Fresh fusion is the holy grail for vegetarians at UM. They serve a wide variety of delcious vegetarian dishes, but my favorite is their grilled cheese and tomato soup.
Burger 305
Every now and then, we all need a good burger— even vegetarians! Burger 305 makes a delicious veggie burger and super crispy french fries. They also sell sweet potato fries and onion rings.
Panda Express
Even though Panda Express doesn’t offer any vegetarian entrees, you can compensate by ordering three sides and an appetizer. I like to get the veggie rolls with a bowl of chow mien, mixed veggies and fried rice. Even though you aren’t ordering one of their traditional entrees, it is a delicious meal that will definitely fill you up.
Hack: Ask for soy sauce to dip your veggie rolls in.
Lime
The delicious Vegetarian Lime Burrito comes with refried beans, cotija cheese, shredded cheese, Pico de Gallo, sour cream, tortilla strips and salsa asada. This makes for a delicious and hardy meal that is sure to satisfy everyone, even meat lovers!
Hack: Even if a menu item has meat listed, Lime will substitute the meat for beans.
Starbucks
Besides having delicious coffee and drinks, Starbucks sells healthy and quick food options, which is why it’s my go-to breakfast stop. The Berry Trio Yogurt is a light breakfast, and the bagel with organic avocado spread is to die for. I would also recommend getting a side of fresh fruit if your looking for a fuller meal.
Dining Hall
For those days when you want a tasty meal without breaking the bank, the dining hall has lots of vegetarian options. A hidden dining hall gem is their black bean burger. Simply go to the grill and ask them to make it for you. They prepare it fresh and you can even add your own toppings. Most people don’t know this, but the grill staff will also make you vegan chicken nuggets as well as grilled cheeses.
And of course, the salad bar offers a wide assortment of toppings and dressings so that you will never get bored.
Vegetarians, go hungry no longer. As school resumes this fall, I hope you get a chance to try all these yummy meatless meals that the University of Miami has to offer.
