This Yogurt is Much Better Than Greek Yogurt and Here’s Why

Greek yogurt has long been praised as a healthy snack for being high in protein, low in sodium, and low in carbohydrates (and don’t get me wrong- it definitely is). But a new yogurt brand, called siggi’s dairy, has made its way into the healthy food scene, as it is quickly becoming the new food-blogger’s favorite.

What sets siggi’s apart from regular yogurt is the fact that it is actually an Icelandic dairy product called skyr. Skyr is made only with skim milk and live active cultures, and the water that is naturally found in milk (called whey) is strained to create a yogurt that is noticeably thicker and creamier than others.

siggi’s was founded by Siggi Hilmarsson in 2004. He grew up eating skyr, so found yogurt sold in the U.S. to be too sweet and too artificial. He used a recipe that his mom sent him and started making skyr from his own apartment in New York. A few months later, he quit his day job and officially opened siggi’s dairy.

siggi’s dairy prides itself on using very little sugar and simple ingredients. Its products are all-natural, gluten-free, and non-GMO verified. They also have no artificial preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, or colors. It uses milk from grass-fed cows and has real fruit.

siggi’s 0% Plain Yogurt has 3g of sugar, 17g of protein, and just 100 calories whereas Chobani’s Plain Greek Yogurt has 4g of sugar, 13g of protein, and 130 calories.

I personally have tried siggi’s and love its thicker consistency and more subtle flavor. It makes for the perfect breakfast, especially when paired with fresh fruit and Purely Elizabeth’s granola. You can find siggi’s at Whole Foods, so what are you waiting for? Go buy some skyr today!
