Everyone’s Classic College Experiences, Explained With Candies

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at BU chapter.

As a young girl, I was outraged about having to go to school on Halloween. However, as I’ve gotten older I’ve come to realize that it is the day after Halloween that I would prefer to have off. Although Halloween has come and gone, college has not. Yes, your attendance is still expected in your 8 am no matter how many candy-inspired drinks you downed the night before.

After reflecting on some of the sweets I devoured post trick-or-treating as a kid, I have compiled a list of candies that perfectly reflect common college experiences that every student will inevitably have.

1. Sleeping Through Class: Candy Corn

The sound of your alarm going off in the morning is undeniably the most excruciating noise you have ever heard. You hit snooze, thinking it doesn’t really matter if you skip class just this one time. At the end of the semester, you realize “one time” was actually six.

It’s the same deal with candy corn, the Halloween candy people love to hate. A handful is nice, but the pounding headache that is guaranteed to ensue after too much sugar makes you regret it every time. If you’re anything like me though, you’ll still do it again the next day.

2. Doing Poorly On An Assignment You Thought You Did Well On: Airheads

Nothing feels better than turning in an assignment with confidence, and nothing feels worse than getting that assignment back to see that you completely missed the point.

#SpoonTip: Eat your feelings with an Airhead when you feel like an airhead after getting a D on your research paper. Hopefully, you feel more like a Smarties next time.

3. Justifying That An Unhealthy Food Is Healthy: Reese’s

You can only force yourself to eat a salad at the dining hall so many times until you start to justify eating junk food by telling yourself it’s healthy. Unfortunately, the peanut butter core of a Reese’s doesn’t make it a protein-packed snack, no matter how much you wish it did. This is one of the most heart-shattering realities we must face as college students, while continuing to make such justifications anyways. To feel a little healthier, try these homemade peanut butter cups.

4. Eating Candy for Breakfast: Stuffed Pancakes

We all have those days when we wake up with a sweet tooth. Sometimes a sugary cereal does the job, but other days Frosted Flakes just won’t cut it. If you’re going to eat candy for breakfast, you may as well do it the right way with a delectable dish rather than just a handful of M&M’s out of the bag. Try out these candy-stuffed pancakes. 5. You Need A Breather: Take 5

Every now and then you swear all your professors meet up and decide to bombard you with huge assignments all due on the same day. I promise you, they don’t. Although it feels like the universe is plotting against you, remember to Take 5 for some rest and relaxation.

6. The Party Is Lit: Pop Rocks

Many describe Pop Rocks as a party in your mouth. College parties provide a similar sensation. The lights, the music, and the vibes all create a—dare I say—popping environment, making you want to bounce around the dance floor. Before you go out, pre-game with this Pop Rocks Cocktail.

7. You Need To Be Saved: Lifesavers

Your hangover may leave you needing one, and your professor canceling class may be one. Lifesavers can be difficult to find at times when you feel like you need them most, but other times they show up unannounced. Count your blessings when they do.

Some of these experiences are more fun than others, but they are all a part of college that you simply cannot avoid. If one of these hasn’t happened to you yet, it’s on its way. Also, for those of you who prefer to indulge in ice cream rather than candy, go relate your college experiences to these Ben & Jerry’s flavors.
