5 Fall-Themed Treats to Enjoy Before It Gets Chillier

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Bowdoin chapter.

The leaves are changing color, the temperature is dropping just the right amount, and Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Time is flying as fast as the falling leaves, so now is the time to eat all the best fall-themed treats before the cold, long winter arrives! Crawl under a cozy blanket or sit outside with a big comfy sweater as you enjoy a delicious, seasonal treat. Here are five foods/drinks you have to try this fall!

1. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins

Pumpkin is probably one of the first flavors you think of when thinking about fall foods. Of course, you could have pumpkin pie, but pumpkin and chocolate chips pair so well together. Muffins are the perfect food to have with breakfast in the morning, or as a snack anytime. Head to breakfast in the dining halls on Wednesdays to grab one, or try to bake your own! You won’t be disappointed.

2. Apple Crisp Gelato

Gelato Fiasco has multiple fall-themed flavors that you can’t miss! Apple Crisp has been my favorite, but you could also try Apple Cider and Donuts, Apple Cinnamon, “Fall in Bourbon County,” or Pumpkin Pie. Or, try all of them and experience the wide range of delicious fall flavors! The apple flavors mixed into creamy gelato is a magical combination that is bound to give you a smile. It might be cold when you go, but that is no excuse to not get gelato—bring a jacket and take a brisk walk!

3. Snickerdoodle Cookies

This one might not be as obvious of a fall treat as the others, but snickerdoodle cookies definitely give me fall vibes. The cinnamon sugar within and on top of the soft, fluffy cookie transforms a normal sugar cookie into a special fall-themed treat. Wild Oats has delicious snickerdoodles, but you can also try to make your own—and add however much cinnamon sugar you want!

4. Apple Pie

This is the ultimate fall dessert, and you don’t have to wait until Thanksgiving to enjoy it. Sweet, gooey (in a good way) apples nestled inside crispy and flaky pie crust create arguably the best pie there is. For an optimal experience, pair a warm slice of apple pie with some cold vanilla ice cream or fluffy whipped cream.

5. Apple Cider

This is one of my favorites to enjoy in the fall. You can try it hot or cold, depending on the weather and your mood. Head over to a local coffee shop, or try to make your own! Apple cider is crisp, yet also just the right amount of sweet. The wonderfully tang of fresh apples lingers in your mouth after you take a sip, and you’ll surely go back for more.

There are many, many other fall treats you could try this season, but I’ve listed some of the basics that I think everyone should treat themselves to before fall is over! Autumn flavors complement the crisp temperatures and colorful foliage perfectly, so immerse yourself in the beautiful fall season that makes Maine even more special.
