5 UW-Madison Meals Under $5 That Aren’t Pizza

Sure, a $5 pizza is satisfying, especially during those nights of cramming at the library for an upcoming exam. However, there are a lot more inexpensive eats on and around campus to check out. Here are some tasty and filling meals under $5 for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for all of us #BadgersonaBudget.

1. Library Mall Food Carts: Spring Rolls

I still find it surprising that one of my all-time favorite foods on campus is a meal under $5. You can get these giant spring rolls on Library Mall during the warmer months. They are full of rice noodles, crunchy veggies, avocado, and protein of your choice. I love mine spicy with shrimp or tofu. They are hand-prepared and freshly made soon after you order. Make sure you go when you have a little time on your hands. It’s worth every minute!

#SpoonTip: These can last a day in the fridge. Save half for a meal the next day if you cannot eat it all in one sitting.

2. Caribou Coffee-Einstein Bros Bagels: Avocado Toast

The avocado toast at Caribou-Einsteins is served on a freshly-toasted bagel and makes a super filling breakfast or lunch. It costs $3.79. I recommend getting a plain or honey wheat bagel to really enjoy the flavor of the avocado spread and everything seasoning on top. It is truly the best savory complement to your favorite coffee or tea beverage.

3. Gordon Avenue Market: Mexican Food

There is really no reason to outgrow the dining halls. Gordon’s serves up quesadillas and rice bowls almost every day, and you can get as much salsa, sour cream, and guacamole on the side as you’d like. Even if you live off-campus, a quesadilla is under $5 ($3.99 to be exact). They are super filling and always kick my Chipotle cravings to the curb.

#SpoonTip: If you’re looking for more dining hall hacks, check this out!

4. Sushi Express: Sushi Rolls

Sushi Express is a hidden gem located slightly off campus on University Avenue. They serve a wide range of original and specialty rolls, along with different Asian-inspired favorites like teriyaki, udon, and lo mein. For under $5, you can get a lot of different types of sushi and sashimi. One order of sushi usually has 6 rolls, and I especially enjoy the Boston and Spicy Tuna.

5. Mickie’s Dairy Bar: Sandwiches

Enough said. Other than the world-famous, incredibly fluffy pancakes, there are a ton of breakfast and lunch options under $5 at Mickies, like $3.50 sandwiches! Take a little weekend trip and check out this classic Madison gem.

College is already expensive, but there is no need to feel bad about eating out. Try one of these $5 meals on and around campus. Trust me, your stomach (and your bank account) will thank you.
