The Casa Bacardi Experience In Puerto Rico

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Hofstra chapter.

Spring Break is a good time to enjoy ourselves. College students have the chance to relax, discover new places, and catch up with their favorite activities.

Similar to any other vacation, it is suggested to plan those free days at its best so that you can make the most out of them, especially if you travel.

My roommate and I decided to visit San Juan, Puerto Rico. It was one of the best choices I’ve ever made and besides the beautiful beaches I went to, I got the chance to taste some delicious food at Casa Bacardi.

The Place

Casa Bacardi is spread all over a large piece of green land in Cataño, a town close to San Juan. If you’re staying in San Juan, any Uber or car ride can take you to Casa Bacardi for less than $15. The tour we chose, the historical one, was only $15 per person. I believe it was worthy, considering that the tour is composed of a full visit of the Bacardi house, in addition to a complimentary drink.

At the entrance of Casa Bacardi, you get the chance to see a couple of tents where drinks and foods are served, as well as chairs and tables where people can seat to enjoy their meals and beverages. The main attraction is, of course, the bar, where visitors are able to get a Welcome Drink before entering the Casa Bacardi experience.

The Tour

After embarking on a train that allowed us to go from the welcoming space to the actual Bacardi house, my roommate and I finally started the Bacardi experience. Along with a group of people of all ages – from college students to middle-aged women and men from all over the world – we were taken into a room with a high ceiling, a blue fountain in the center, and several mosaics around us. Our guide started explaining the history of the place, from Christopher Columbus’ times to the age of Don Facundo Bacardi Masso’, the founder of the Bacardi brand of the rum we all know.

As usually many similar tours go, after watching an introductory movie about our visit to Casa Bacardi, our tour man guided us into a series of rooms. Here we had the chance to see and listen to the stories about the origins of the brand, what’s the process for obtaining rum, and the different kinds of rums Bacardi has ever produced.

Overall Impression

The historical tour was definitely one of the most interesting activities I’ve done during my time in Puerto Rico. I would’ve loved to experience also other kinds of tours, but for that, you need to be over the drinking age, and not all the people that my roommate and I were with had that prerequisite. Nevertheless, I preferred this kind of just taking the historical tour, because it gave lots of information about not only the Bacardi brand but also on rum – how is it made, where does it come from, how it is distributed. I believe that it is important to know what’s behind every food or drink that we ingest. The Casa Bacardi experience was a good time to explore a part of Puerto Rico and to sip a good quality rum under the Caribbean sun!

I'm more of a Gershwin fan, but Macklemore once said: "the quickest way to happiness? learning to be selfless".
