As papers, readings, and labs begin to pile up, we are all looking for a sweet escape. And what better outlet is there than Netflix? Personally, my favorite shows and movies revolve around food. Whether you’re looking for an educational documentary, a drama-filled movie, or just some delicious looking food porn, Netflix is the perfect destination to find the absolute best foodie movies and TV shows. It’s a foodie’s must-have distraction.
1. The Great British Bake Off
If you haven’t started watching this series yet, what have you been doing? Paul Hollywood and Mary Berry (or, Prue Lieth— depending on which season you’re watching) judge the best amateur bakers from all across the UK. This series is unlike any competition show you can find in the US. Why? Well, because it’s relaxing, it’s educational, the competitors are friendly, and the prize is pride (and a single cake stand) rather than money. Plus, it’s full of mouthwatering shots of everyone’s favorite desserts. And there’s more good news: currently, there are six seasons on Netflix, so the Great British Bake Off will keep you occupied for quite a while.
2. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret
If you’re looking for something on the heavier, more serious side, then you have to check out this documentary. Cowspiracy is the perfect fit for anyone who cares about how their actions impact the environment. Follow Kip Anderson as he digs deeper into the true motivations behind some of the most recognizable environmental groups. Anderson also explores some of the overlooked contributors to climate change. I bet you’ll change at least a few of your eating and food-based habits after watching this information-packed documentary.
3. Julie & Julia
This foodie movie is an absolute roller coaster ride of laughs, tears, and everything in between, but it’s totally worth it. Follow Julie Powell (Amy Adams) on her journey to prepare all 524 recipes from Julia Childs’s (Meryl Steep) cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. This movie jumps back and forth between the journeys of both Powell and Child as they explore the culinary world and perservere through unfamiliar landscapes. This dramatic yet hilarious movie is sure to keep your mind off studying. And, after all, who doesn’t love Meryl Streep?
4. Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
Do you love comedies, coffee, or cars? If your answer is yes, then this show is your perfect fit. Follow Jerry Seinfeld and his famous, comedian guests as they ride around in spectacular cars. In each episode, Seinfeld and his guests try out a new café. You may even find some café inspiration as you sit back and enjoy the laughs. Whether he’s with Tina Fey, Larry David, or Barack Obama, whoever Jerry invites to join him on his car-riding, coffee-sipping journey is sure to fill the room with laughter.
5. Ugly Delicious
You might recognize award-winning chef David Chang from Buzzfeed’s “Worth It” (an online series that’s not available on Netflix but is definitely still binge-worthy). Now, Chang is tackling some of the most famous food spots around the world in this travelogue. On a mission to break down cultural barriers, Chang pushes both himself and restaurant owners to try new and exciting dishes. There’s currently only one season on Netflix, but don’t worry because a second season has been confirmed. And I promise you this: after watching Chang’s show you’ll definitely want a ticket to Nashville to try their famous hot chicken.
So, whether you’re in the mood to watch a documentary, comedy, or competition show, there are numerous foodie movie and show options on Netflix that will keep you entertained for hours. If you breeze through this list or just want to see all that the world of food entertainment has to offer, then you should definitely start exploring. Poke around on Netflix or elsewhere, and I’m sure you’ll find something to keep your mind off your work.
