How to Make Garlic Bread ON Your Toaster (Yes, On)

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Cal Poly chapter.

A food loved by much of the world: the delicious, simple garlic bread. There’s more ways to make it and enhance it than I can even count. We can make it on slices, on loaves, stuffed with cheese, with meats, etc. It’s a very versatile food. And it’s become a staple, especially in America. We make garlic bread in our free time as a snack, for dinners, and for parties. You just pop it in the oven for 10-15 minutes and you’re presented with a flavor-filled dish, just like that.

Let’s go back to that 10-15 minutes in the oven part. It sounds easy, but is it really the most convenient way? You have to wait 10-20 minutes just for the oven to preheat, and then you have to sit there for even longer, getting hungrier and hungrier while the smells of garlic, butter, and herbs tantalize your nose.

And some people don’t even have ovens—like college students. You can’t exactly bring an oven into a dorm, now can you? So how are you supposed to make your beloved garlic bread?

On a toaster. Yes, on.

A couple weeks ago, I was sitting in my living room doing homework when the smell of garlic bread floated over to me from the kitchen. I wandered over to the kitchen, where my roommate was standing, gleefully holding a plate of fresh garlic bread.

“Did you just pull garlic bread out of thin air?” I asked her, joking but still very baffled. I know microwave garlic bread never comes out well, and the bread she was holding looked perfect.

“Duh, I made it on the toaster!” she replied.

Now I was confused. This was a way I’d never considered before, and I actually had no idea what she was talking about. Later, I asked my friends and they’d never heard of making garlic bread on a toaster either, so I figured I would share her inventive way of cooking here at Spoon University.

So for all of you that don’t have an oven or simply don’t want to wait half an hour before eating: how to make good simple garlic bread on a toaster!

Instructions

  1. Combine soft butter with herbs and finely chopped garlic (you can use garlic powder if you don’t have fresh garlic but fresh tastes so much better!).

  2. Cut the bread into smaller pieces (about 2 inches by 4 inches). Spread garlic butter generously on the bread.

Lay two pieces at a time on top of the toaster on the two openings, buttered side facing up.

Turn the toaster to the lowest setting, because the bread will burn from the bottom fast on anything higher. Your simple garlic bread should be done in a minute!

This recipe might not have fancy cheeses but it’s fast, convenient, and a satisfying way to make a favorite food! So thanks to my roommate, we can all get up, make garlic bread in the next 5-10 minutes and come right back to our laptops and computers to read more food articles. Happy garlic bread-making!
