There are few things more upsetting than slicing up a perfectly ripe pear, only to lose large chunks of it in the process. Being reminded of the merciless fact that you are not in culinary school and don’t really know how to use a knife properly can be disheartening. Pears are no exception to this tragedy, so here’s how to peel a pear (without making a mess).
Peeling a Pear
Ingredients
Instructions
Bring the water to a boil, then drop the pears in for approximately 30 seconds.
Get those pears out of that pot, and move them into some warm water. This will keep the skins from sticking to the fruit, and let you easily peel them off by rubbing them between your fingers. If the skin doesn’t slide off easily, you can place the pear back into the boiling water for a few more seconds. By using this method, you also keep all the messy skin pieces in one place to be easily disposed of later.
Dunk the pears in icy cold water to prevent them from cooking (and to bring them back to an edible temperature).
You’re done! Eat your pears as is, or add them to a tasty treat.
