9 Places to Get the Best Sushi in Washington DC

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Georgetown chapter.

DC has recently become known for its “foodie” restaurants with their interesting cuisines and fun atmospheres. So it is not surprising that over the past few years numerous sushi restaurants have popped up all over DC.

Like most restaurants in DC, the best sushi restaurants range from being extremely affordable to incredible expensive as well as extremely casual to extremely fancy. That being said whether you are a sushi fanatic or just a fan of a plain old California rolls, the following list has something for everyone.

Disclaimer: These are in no particular order.

1. Maté

Maté has recently become my favorite sushi restaurant in Georgetown. It has all the basics you’re looking for plus some really cool speciality rolls AND they have crispy rice squares which (if you know me) is my favorite thing.

2. Perry’s

Not only is Perry’s known for its gorgeous rooftop and extensive menu, unlike most sushi restaurant’s in DC, on some selective Sundays, Perry’s offers Drag. Queen. Brunch. Need I say more?

3. Kaz Sushi Bistro

Kaz Sushi Bistro is one of DC’s best sushi restaurants because of its authentic Japanese style cooking and “out-there” dishes. Whether you’re looking for a classic roll or feel more on the adventurous side, Kaz will have everything you’re looking for, but beware prices are steep.

4. Sushi Taro

If you’re looking for a truly authentic Japanese experience then Sushi Taro is for you. Sushi Taro follows the “Kaiseki” method which is a traditional dining experience in which diners are not given a menu. At Sushi Taro you choose 1 of 4 tasting menus that the restaurant offers then the chef will “entertain” you with a series of dishes.

5. Sushi Capitol

Sushi Capitol is pretty traditional but also pretty basic. The small restaurant has a small menu but true sushi lovers will appauld the restaurant’s authentic and traditional dishes. Plus, it is one of the cheaper authentic restaurants in DC.

6. Sushi Ogawa

This one is for all the die-hard sushi lovers out there. At Sushi Ogawa it is $80 to sit at a table and $100 to sit at the bar. Once you are there you will be given a menu (there is no way to see the menu beforehand) and the experience usually consists of 12-14 courses.

7. Umaya Izakaya

Umaya Izakaya is not only known for its sushi but the restaurant also focuses on traditional Japanese ramen. If you’re looking for something in between super cheap and super fancy then Umaya should be your go to.

8. Sakerum

Sakerum is the place to go if you’re looking for a night out. I suggest starting your night at Sakerum with some of their adventurous rolls and signature cocktails. The vibe of the place will make you feel like you’re at a club and will help get you in the mood for your big night out.

9. Raku

Raku is another that will satisfy all your sushi and Japanese cuisine cravings. Whether you’re looking to over load on a Bento box full of sushi or just want a few rolls, Raku is known in DC for being one of the ebst.

Whether you’re looking for a casual and cheap lunch, an expensive authentic experience or a night out with good food and drinks, this list of DC restaurants will definitely help you find what you’re looking.
