We’ve all been there. Waking up Friday morning after an overly thirsty Thursday—nauseous, dry mouth, pounding headache, exhaustion, and regret. Plus, we usually only have about 20 minutes before we need to drag ourselves to our dreaded 8 am. To skip another morning lecture or be miserable all day? With this hangover cure you may be able to avoid both. Intrigued? Keep reading.
Drop What Doesn’t Work
My friends and I thought we had tried every hangover cure: waking up, chugging three bottles of water, struggling through morning workouts, downing a couple of Gatorades, and devouring greasy breakfast sandwiches. Unfortunately, not only are these not the most effective, sometimes they’re just a downright farce.
After a night of drinking, the last thing I want to do is bloat myself by forcing down absurd amounts of water or Gatorade. Although it’s full of electrolytes and occasionally satisfying, Gatorade is definitely not worth the unnecessary amounts of sugar and calories. One 32 oz drink has about 56 grams of added sugar (that’s twice of your recommended added sugar intake before even getting out of bed!) and 215 calories. Yikes. I’ll pass.
A Promising Solution?
A good friend of mine told me I needed to buy Pedialyte, the electrolyte solution for infants suffering from vomiting and diarrhea to replenish fluids and minerals in my body. After a quick Google search, I found that it contains more sodium and less sugar than most sports drinks and would therefore likely restore my electrolytes even quicker. This seemed promising, so I gave it a shot.
If you’ve ever experienced Pedialyte as a sick child, you will know what I am talking about. If you have never tried it, DON’T EVEN BOTHER. Upon first sip, I thought I was going to spit it up. It was seriously worse than the hangover. It tasted like salty, candy-coated misery. In order to actually feel any effect, the amount of Pedialyte that would need to be consumed was not worth this torture. The perfect solution? Not quite.
The Answer to Our Prayers
Finally, a few weeks into my second semester, after far too many painful Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings, when I thought all hope was lost, my roommate introduced me to the miracle itself. Apparently Pedialyte has it’s own brand of popsicles, and they were amazing. Pedialyte Freezer Pops are the answers to any college student’s prayers: cold, sweet, and refreshing. Each option—grape, blue raspberry, cherry, and orange—was equally delicious.
Astonishingly, these pops had only 2 grams of sugar and 5 calories each. Plus, one pop did the trick so you won’t be left feeling gross and bloated. My nausea vanished, headache diminished, and shaky hands stabilized. After one tasty freezer pop, I was left feeling like a new person, ready to take on the day (and the rest of the weekend).
Today, it’s nearly impossible to imagine our little dorm freezer not fully stocked with these frozen miracle workers, or how I managed to get by without them after nights out. It’s time the world knows about this hidden gem! Do yourself a favor and run to your local CVS or Walgreens and get some pops on deck. You will 100% be thanking yourself later.
