Swap Out Your Mimosa for This Classic German Cocktail at Your Next Brunch

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Delaware chapter.

I have been lucky enough to enjoy Heineken at the Heineken Factory rooftop bar in Amsterdam, drink German beer out of mugs bigger than my head at Hofbrauhauses (giant beer halls) in Munich, and knock a few meads back, which are drinks made from fermented honey and water. I even stumbled upon a German cocktail I loved more than German beer. I know, crazy.

I was overwhelmed with the stellar cocktail and beer options in Germany until a Hugo was recommended to me. If you’ve never heard of this cocktail, you are not alone. Trust me though, after one sip of this sweet, crisp, and refreshing drink made with Prosecco, mineral water, and Elderflower syrup, you will never want to put your glass down.

This cold, minty, and easy-to-make drink can and should be enjoyed all year round, but it’s especially delicious in the summertime. For those of you who love sparkling wine, or any wine in general, you will absolutely love this cocktail.

It’s time to ditch the go-to mimosa one weekend and make a Hugo for your next roomie brunch. This drink would also be perfect at an outside BBQ or picnic.  I understand that a Hugo is not the most sophisticated cocktail in the world, but it is consistently delicious and so easy to replicate. Travel back to Germany with me and try this Hugo recipe.
