Why You Should Try Schnitz at Smorgasburg

Started in Smorgasburg in 2011 by three young restaurateurs, Schnitz recently opened its first brick-and-mortar in the East Village. As the name suggests, the shop specializes in sandwiches made with various types of schnitzel, a thin cutlet covered in breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. Schnitz’ sandwiches are served on pretzel bread with tangy sauces and garnishes such as pickled cucumbers and radish. The new store has expanded its selection of schnitzel sandwiches to include a variety of interesting combinations such as the S.L.T (pork belly schnitzel topped with Schnitz Greens, pickled tomatoes and mayo) and the Lt. Dan (shrimp schnitzel topped with a jicama-fennel slaw and a lemongrass mayo) to name a few.

Although the wait can seem unnecessarily long during off-peak hours, the tantalizing smell from the kitchen promises that is worthwhile and the food indeed lives up to the expectations.

The Bamberg is slightly spicy with a strong hint of dijon mustard and schnitzel that is cooked to perfection – crisp on the outside yet tender on the inside. The pretzel brioche makes every meal hearty but not overwhelming.

The visually-appealing Sweet Onion, served with a pink beet tzatziki sauce, is surprisingly light and refreshing. The flavor of the schnitzel is enhanced by a combination of pickled cabbage, jicama, radish and cilantro that makes the sandwich seem light and not at all calorie-laden.

The Yonz is a great choice for all vegetarians out there. Instead of the traditional meat, the schnitzel is made with a combination of corn and butternut squash. The honey-sriracha mayo adds a wonderful finishing touch to this healthier option.
