5 Ways to Maximize Brainpower this Midterm Season

We all know that cramming for an exam is inevitable from time to time. However, with the proper fuel, you can maximize brainpower with more focus and concentration during study sessions than ever before. By eating the right food, your brain can preform at the best of its ability without sacrificing the flavor and convenience that other snacks provide. Eating the right food can make you and your GPA happy this Spring.

1. Blueberries

Blueberries are packed with antioxidants and vitamins that protect against stress and brain degeneration. By fighting off stress causing hormones, blueberries are the perfect snack for studying. Eating berries, including strawberries and blackberries, prevents memory loss and improves cognition. Also, blueberries are a great when added to smoothies, salads, and are delicious on their own. 

 2. Avocado

It is well-known that this trendy food has many health benefits but did you know they can help your brain too? Because of the vitamins and fat content in avocados, concentration and memory are improved which, of course, helps during cram sessions. Interestingly, our brains are composed of 60 percent fat and the fat in avocados ensures our brains work correctly. Next time you are studying, reach for guacamole, I mean, it is good for you! 

3. Eggs

Many people believe egg whites are the heathiest part of an egg and the yolk gets a bad wrap for its cholesterol content. However, the egg yolk is packed with the nutrients your brain needs to perform well and the cholesterol found in eggs is not harmful like other kinds. This protein-packed brainfood is known for being the cheapest way to up your protein consumption and it can be prepared so many ways (including in the microwave) that you will never get bored. 

4. Dark Chocolate

Craving something sweet? While candy bars may be tempting, reaching for a dark chocolate alternative may be better for your brain. It’s said that dark chocolate with 70 percent cocoa helps improve brain function and alertness while studying. In the short term, dark chocolate improves action time and memory. While routine consumption of dark chocolate can improve test scores and blood flow to the brain. Not only is dark chocolate delicious on its own, but when added, any meal becomes a treat.

How can you incorporate these foods into your day-to-day? Kickstart your morning with a breakfast sandwich with eggs and avocado or yogurt topped with blueberries and dark chocolate. Oh, and of course, do not forget to grab some coffee to reach maximum brainpower. The aforementioned foods are all great on their own as snacks or as additions to many meals. With the proper brainfood, you will be eating your way to a top-notch GPA.
