BRAINFOOD: Spoon University X TABASCO® Brand Recap

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at USC chapter.

On November 12th, Spoon University partnered with TABASCO® Brand to host a virtual conference about creating food content and some unique ways to add TABASCO® pepper sauces to your everyday food items. The event called Brainfood, had speakers Izzie Ramirez, Victoria Vargas, Joseph Labrador, and Karen Rosenbloom all speak about their specialties and how they showcase their “perfect bites” or perfect recipes. If that doesn’t sound interesting enough to already click the Brainfood link to watch the recording of the event, here is a recap about what was covered and the recipe recommendations!

How to Take Photos and Express a Story Through Your Food

In the beginning of the virtual conference, Victoria Vargas, junior associate and a part of the campus marketing and community team, shared their tips on photographing food. Vargas made grilled cheese with tomato soup, and she showed the audience how to properly utilize the lighting in your house, and how to take action shots. Go check out the beginning of the video for these amazing tips and to see shots of a delicious grilled cheese!

Q&A Section

Joseph Labrador, Spoon University creator, took some of the audience’s questions. Questions varying from “how do you write about a food you aren’t familiar with”, to “what applications and equipment do you use,” are all covered during this conference. Ever wonder what to do if you do not have good lighting? Or what can you do with an iPhone camera, and what editing apps should you use? All these can be answered and found in the middle of the conference!

Recipe 2: Caprese Sandwich with Prosciutto:

Take 2 pieces of sourdough bread, smear some pesto onto one side of the bread, take a ball of burrata cheese and slice it open, allowing the cheese to melt over the bread. Add some fresh sliced tomatoes, salt and pepper, and sliced prosciutto. Sprinkle some arugula over the prosciutto, drizzle some extra virgin olive oil, and dash some TABASCO® Chipotle sauce over the bread. Let the two slices of bread meat to make a sandwich, and slice the sandwich to your desire. Enjoy a messy but tasty spicy twist to a Caprese sandwich.

Recipe 3: Spicy Margarita (Mocktail if needed)

Take an ounce and a half of tequila or soda water, half an ounce of triple sec or orange juice, and a half an ounce of simple syrup. Mix and squeeze about half an ounce or less of lime juice, and drizzle about half a teaspoon of TABASCO® Green Jalapeño Sauce. Mix again and voila!
