If Union Frats Were Ben & Jerry’s Flavors

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Union chapter.

Union College is nicknamed the “Mother of All Fraternities.” Ben and Jerry’s was founded in Vermont. Those two statements have nothing in common, but I’m going to compare Union College’s current fraternities with Ben and Jerry’s flavors.

This is all in good fun! Fraternities add so much dimension to Union’s campus and I’m thankful for all that Greek Life has done for me personally. These are just fun comparisons; nothing that is written is coming from a bad place.

Sigma Chi: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough

To start off, a worldwide (or campus-wide, for this matter) favorite. Though one of the “newer” frats (it wasn’t founded on Union’s campus), Sig Chi is easily one of the most popular frats on Union’s campus, amongst first years and upperclassmen alike. It’s widely adored by many, just like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. When I think of ice cream, I think of that vanilla base, chock full of chocolate chip cookie dough. When I think of frats, I think of Sig Chi.

Theta Delta Chi: Chocolate Fudge Brownie

Next up: Theta Delta Chi. When I think of Greek Life at Union, I think of TDX. TDX is filled with boys that are just as authentic as the fraternity is to the school (for reference, TDX was founded on Union’s campus). It’s for this reason that TDX is the Chocolate Fudge Brownie of Union frats. These frat boys are admired and loved by many, both for their work as an organization, but also for the men who compose their brotherhood. It’s a classic taste, and one you’ll go back to time and time again, just like TDX.

Chi Psi: Cherry Garcia

Just like Cherry Garcia is one of Ben and Jerry’s prime flavors, Chi Psi is one of Union’s prime frats. Similar to Cherry Garcia, Chi Psi has its die-hard fans. Like many fruity flavors, some may not like it at first taste. However, you might find that it grows on you as you try it, and once you’ve reached that point, you’ll never look back. Some brothers are as sweet as the cherries you’ll find in the ice cream. As a whole, Chi Psi is as esteemed as an organization as Cherry Garcia is as a flavor, known for being successful across athletics. Just like every other frat and flavor, for some, it’s a favorite; for others, it’s one they’d be willing to try, but may not be their top choice.

Sigma Phi: The Tonight Dough

The brothers of Sigma Phi are some of the nicest guys you’ll meet on Union’s campus. There’s a wide variety of guys in Sig Phi, leaving something for everyone–regardless of their taste. This is why its Ben and Jerry’s counterpart is The Tonight Dough. It’s comprised of a ton of different flavors–caramel, chocolate, cookie, peanut butter; there’s probably something you like, just like Sig Phi. No matter the circumstance, no matter the time of day, The Tonight Dough always sounds great, is always there for you, and might always be the one you grab off the shelf of the freezer.

Alpha Delta Phi: Half Baked

OK. I know what you’re thinking–but that is not the only reason I chose Half Baked as Alpha Delta Phi’s counterpart. Based off its unique events and always-classic AD Dinner, AD honestly could reign supreme. Its location on campus and size might have it under the radar for some, but it always comes back and reminds people why its one of the best. Just like Half Baked, there’s nothing not to like. The brothers are sweet and wholesome, but also have a wild side. For some, AD is always your top choice; for others, it’s one to frequent every now and again.

Kappa Alpha: Strawberry Cheesecake

The newest to get a house on campus (but the first ever founded), Kappa Alpha flies under the radar to say the least. These boys are smart, sweet, and a little awkward, but once you get a taste, it’s hard to stay away. Just like Strawberry Cheesecake, you may never have thought to try it out until there was nothing else around, so you tried it, and man, it impressed. Though the KA boys aren’t your typical “frat bros,” they still know how to have a good time, and make sure everyone around is happy too. Still, you might forget about how much you like it when another flavor shows up. Over time, though, it may work its way into your favorites, just like KA.

Alpha Phi Alpha: Phish Food

Currently the only multicultural frat on Union’s campus, Alpha Phi Alpha is small but mighty. Similar to Phish Food, each flavor shines on its own, but goes great with its other mix-ins, too. The brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha are exceptional on their own, but even better together. Its work on and off campus, and the brotherhood they have created, is something that anyone can appreciate, just like the makings of Phish Food.

So go on, crack open a cold one, and party hard. After all, Saturdays are for the boys (Ben and Jerry are the boys, and the cold one is a pint of ice cream).

Again, this is just for fun! My opinions of Union fraternities are not reflected in this article.

Just a hungry girl from the longest island. My blood stream is 99% coffee at this point.
