The Easiest Way To Make Your Own Chocolate Bar

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UK chapter.

Alright, everyone, I have a confession to make: I’m a total chocoholic. Like my fellow chocoholics all around the globe, I love eating chocolate of all kinds – from sweet to bitter, solid to melted, and so much more, I love it all. Ask any chocolate lover what his or her chocolate dream is, and the answer will most definitely be to make his or her very own custom chocolate bar. If you, my friend, are a fellow chocoholic, maybe this is a dream of yours, too! Sadly, we can’t all take a trip to Hershey’s Chocolate World to create our own sweet treat, but that doesn’t mean our custom chocolate bar dreams are out of reach! This simple ice tray hack is the easiest way to make your own chocolate bar.

I’d been dying to try this ice tray hack for a long time and, after giving it a shot, I can 100% guarantee that I will be doing it again. This seriously is the easiest way to make your own chocolate bar! With so many individual slots available in a tray, using an ice tray also offers a ton of customization. My ice trays had fourteen cube slots each, so I came up with seven different filling ideas: Snickers (caramel sauce and peanuts), peanut butter, white chocolate peppermint chunks, rice crispy cereal (inspired by the delicious Crunch bar 😍), peanuts, s’mores (mini marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs), and crushed pretzels. YUM! Feel free to borrow some of my ideas, or go totally unique with your own!

A quick note before the recipe: The ingredient amounts shown below apply to one 14 chocolate bar serving. If your ice tray has more or less slots than this, you might want to up or lower the ingredient totals a bit to fit your particular ice-tray-needs. Another note: My family loves both milk chocolate and dark chocolate, so I chose to double this recipe and use 12 ounces of both milk chocolate and dark chocolate, which gave me a 28 chocolate bar serving. I highly suggest you do the same – not only because it means you have different styles of chocolate to choose from, but also because it means more chocolate in general. 😉 Feel free to use milk chocolate, white chocolate, bittersweet chocolate . . . let your imagination run wild!

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Lexi Shepherd

Microwave the chocolate at 30 second intervals, stirring at each interval, until the chocolate is melted and smooth. Add the Crisco to help thin the chocolate and make it easier to spread and pour (Crisco also gives it a great sheen!)

  2. Lexi Shepherd

Pour a layer of chocolate into each cube of the ice tray, then tilt the ice tray around to help the chocolate thoroughly coat the sides of each cube (make sure the bottom layer stays thick!) This will give you chocolate u0022cavernsu0022 to put your delicious fillings in. If your chocolate won’t slide around to coat the sides through tilting the tray, you can use a knife to spread the chocolate up the sides of each cube.

  3. Lexi Shepherd

Fill each cube space with your chosen fillings, stopping just below the rim of each individual cube space.

  4. Lexi Shepherd

Carefully spread another layer of chocolate over the top of each individual chocolate bar. If you’re like me and wanted to make one tray of milk chocolate bars and one tray of dark chocolate bars, repeat steps 1-4 with your second type of chocolate before moving on to step 5.

It’s time to pop these bad boys in the fridge! I left my chocolates to set up and harden in the fridge overnight, but a couple of hours would also suffice. Tap the exposed chocolate on your bars to make sure the chocolate has hardened before removing the trays from the freezer. To pop the chocolates out of their trays, carefully use a combo of flexing the mold and, if necessary, use a butterknife to wedge them out of the tray.

Final Thoughts

This recipe was a huge hit with my family and boyfriend. It was so fun to sit around the plate and guess what might be inside each bar before we’d dig in! I loved the Snickers and s’mores bars, and the rice crispy cereal bars were a huge hit with everyone at the table. Maybe some of those flavors will turn out to be the favorites amongst you and your own friends/family, or maybe you’ll have totally different flavors to call your faves! There’s only one way to find out. Grab an ice tray or two and make your own chocolate bar – I promise you won’t regret it.
