Easy, DIY Hot Cocoa Mix

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UCLA chapter.

For as long as I can remember, hot chocolate has been an essential part of my holiday routine. So essential, in fact, that my family would run out of the store bought packets in less than a week. The solution was obvious, so I set out to create the perfect homemade hot chocolate mix. If your family is anything like mine, they’ll love this super easy four-ingredient DIY hot cocoa mix.

After a healthy dose of experimentation and chocolate, I’ve found that all I need to make a good cup of hot cocoa is both powdered and granulated sugar, cocoa powder, and a dash of salt. I make the mix in the same glass jar I store it in, making the whole process that much easier.

Arguably one of the best parts of DIY cocoa mix is the ability to adjust the recipe to your own tastes. If you want a richer taste, increase the amount of cocoa you add. If the sweetness is too much, take out some sugar. This recipe is as forgiving as it is delicious.

Once you’ve made the mix, warm up a mug full of milk (I like to use oat or almond), add two spoonfuls (less or more according to your taste!) of the mix, and top with whipped cream and marshmallows.

Instructions

  1. Mix powdered and granulated sugar.

  2. Mix cocoa and dash of salt into the sugar mix.

  3. Store in jar and enjoy! When you’re ready to make the hot cocoa itself, warm up a mug of milk of your choice and add 1 1/2 tablespoons of cocoa mix to the milk (adjust for taste).

When you’ve completed your cocoa, and topped it with all the extras your heart desires, curl up with friends or family, and your favorite mug to enjoy the simple pleasure of a warm drink on a cold day. May your holidays be as sweet as hot cocoa!
