Fall Into Fall With These 4 Seasonal Food Trends

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at UC Berkeley chapter.

Dropping temperatures, golden leaves, and chilly breezes. Ah yes, it’s that time of year again. While it may not feel like fall yet–especially in Berkeley–these seasonal food trends are sure to get you into that autumnal vibe.

1. Pumpkin

I think it’s safe to say that fall is synonymous with pumpkins. Better yet, fall marks the annual return of pumpkin pies, pumpkin spice, and all things pumpkin-flavored. This food trend may seem one-note and overused; however, pumpkin has a lot to offer with its surprising versatility. The sweet, earthy taste lends itself especially well to baked goods. If you’re in the mood for savory instead, just add some heavy cream and parmesan cheese to pumpkin puree for a decadent, filling soup.

2. Apple

That nippy late-September air means it’s apple-picking season. Sprinkled with cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, these fall fruit staples can be used in tarts, pies, turnovers, and more. There’s nothing like warm apple filling drizzled with a syrupy, caramel sauce to get into a cozy mood. Aside from that, the apple’s tartness also pairs great with salty ingredients, like cheddar, and its crisp bite brightens up any leafy salad.

3. Espresso

Though lattes seemingly reign supreme this time of year, fall 2021 is the era of espresso. The richness of a smooth shot is incomparable to a regular cup of joe. If that’s not your thing, don’t worry. Just add a scoop of vanilla ice cream and enjoy your freshly made affogato.

#SpoonTip: Add a dash of espresso to your hot chocolate to give it a kick!

4. Brussels Sprouts

This vegetable is notorious for its bitterness, but when cooked correctly, brussels sprouts have a tender texture that’s addicting to say the least. Plus, roasting them crisps up the outer leaves for an even more satisfying bite. Brussels sprouts are at their peak freshness during the fall, so take advantage of this and try them out for yourself.

Balsamic-roasted brussels sprouts are one of my dinnertime go-tos, no matter the season. To switch it up, swap the balsamic vinegar for minced garlic, parsley, and oregano.

Aside from these four trends, there are countless other ways to celebrate the season. A good rule of thumb is to make the most of autumn’s bountiful harvest. Pears, sweet potatoes, pomegranates, and zucchini are just some of the many fruits and vegetables that ripen in the fall. Add these and other seasonal produce to your shopping list to enjoy fresh, nutritious meals throughout the colder months.

Whether it be at a pumpkin patch, apple orchard, or your local farmer’s market, these ingredients are worth stocking up on for the autumn season. Make sure you give these seasonal food trends a whirl because you never know which could become your new fall favorite.
