This Chocolate Banana Oatmeal Is Deceivingly Healthy

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Toronto chapter.

Oatmeal is one of my favourite breakfasts. Not only is it healthy and convenient, but it tastes delicious too. There are so many different ways you can prepare oatmeal and so many different toppings you can add. I like to switch up my toppings every other morning so I don’t get tired of eating the same thing every day (but I don’t think I could ever get tired of eating oatmeal). This chocolate banana oatmeal recipe is easy to make, nutritious, and super yummy. Made with oats, cocoa powder, cinnamon, and banana, I like to call it the healthy oatmeal version of chocolate banana bread.

Ingredients

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, mix 1 cup oats with approximately 1 1/2 cups of milk. Bring to a boil.

#SpoonTip: You can add more milk to make your oatmeal less thick or less dry.

  2. Kavita Gurm

In the meantime, mash up your banana until it has a smooth consistency.

  3. Kavita Gurm

When the oatmeal has boiled, add the mashed banana to the saucepan of oats. With a spoon, stir in the mashed banana until it blends in with the rest of the oatmeal. Add a few dashes of cinnamon—about 1/2 teaspoon, or however much you’d like.

  4. Kavita Gurm

After the mashed banana has been stirred in, mix in 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder. To make your oats even healthier, you can also mix in 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds and ground flax seeds.

  5. Kavita Gurm

Top with berries, dig in, and enjoy!

#SpoonTip: Garnish with sliced bananas for an extra banana-flavoured punch, or chocolate chips if your sweet tooth is feeling extra strong today.
