Grillcheezerie: Your Childhood Dreams Come True

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at U Mich chapter.

After that freezing football victory against Indiana, I found myself wrapped in a blanket, eating some make-shift pasta because there was no way I was going to go back outside.

Lo and behold, my sister’s friend (who was staying with me for the weekend) walks in with not one, but TWO grilled cheeses from Grillcheezerie.

I’d been hearing great things about this place, but I had no idea just how good it was until she allowed me to take a bite from each of those sandwiches.

One bite, and I knew I had to get over there. Stat.

So, that’s what I did.

At the counter where you order, there is a list of signature sandwich combinations as well as a build-your-own menu. Most of the sandwiches cost about $7, which I would say is a great value for a college student on a budget. I was trying to remember which sandwiches I had devoured days before, when my eyes immediately went to the “shroom” and the “s’mac and cheese” grilled cheeses on the menu.

Note: I later figured out that my sister’s friend actually ordered the “dirty jack,” not the “s’mac and cheese”, but I was not disappointed with my choice.

We didn’t have to wait long before the sandwiches came out to the table (thank goodness!)

The sandwich that looked most appetizing was the “s’mac and cheese,” to which I added caramelized onions and kettle-cooked chips (since I remembered those as the two most appealing ingredients on the “dirty jack”). As we pulled it apart, we saw the ingredients spill out and couldn’t stop ourselves from digging in.

The kettle chips provided a really nice crunch, and the caramelized onions gave the sandwich a ton of flavor. However, it seemed like these ingredients made the mac and cheese component itself take a back seat. I couldn’t tell whether the mac and cheese was actually bland, or if it was just being overpowered by the other ingredients. In hindsight, I maybe should have left them off… or maybe I should have just ordered the “dirty jack” instead.

We also got a classic tomato soup “dipper,” which is a great option if you don’t want a full cup, but rather just a small amount for dipping. It tasted just as classic tomato soup should, but there wasn’t much special about it. Perhaps in the future I will opt for the roasted garlic tomato basil soup–probably in the full cup size.

Although that was a pretty impressive sandwich, the one that delivered even more on flavor was the “shroom.”

The sautéed mushrooms and parsley pesto balanced out the muenster and goat cheese perfectly. While I am normally more of a white-over-wheat girl, this whole wheat bread actually tasted better than the white on the “s’mac and cheese!”

Both of the sandwiches I tried were vegetarian, which I believe is a prerequisite to the true definition of a “grilled cheese.” However, Grillcheezerie has a more elastic definition, offering various sandwiches with chicken, bacon, ham, pepperoni and beef.

I may have thought my daily Kraft American singles on white bread was gourmet as a 7-year-old, but Grillcheezerie surpassed that elementary level (and my expectations) by adding more sophisticated ingredients and complex flavors. Needless to say, I will be returning soon.

P.S.: As if this place couldn’t get any better, they will also deliver grilled cheese right to your door if you don’t feel like trekking out in the cold (Sun-Thurs 11am-11pm and Fri-Sat until 1 am)… You’re welcome.
