Step Aside, Pie!

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at SMU chapter.

Pie haters unite! No more pretending to love your Aunt Sally’s homemade pies, feigning a stomach ache because you “ate too much stuffing and mashed potatoes”, lying about a recent potential gluten allergy, or even taking one token bite for the pie police. The days of fake swallowing and spitting out into Grandmas embroidered turkey napkins are over thanks to these crowd pleasing desserts for non-pie lovers!

Keeping the dirty little secret that I hate pies, especially at the “Kumbayah” holiday called Thanksgiving, has been a monkey on my back like Kanye to Kim. Well, I have finally come out of the closet. I just couldn’t take it any longer.

I didn’t roll in hot screaming profanities (even though I wanted to) about the adored contribution from the Pilgrims, rip on the sugary fruit fillings or point out the caloric intake plaguing the nation. Determined to make a change in the most dreaded part of my holidays, I decided the best way to remedy the situation was to research any and all possibilities to replace that horrible dessert.

Here are two of my favorite crowd pleasing desserts for non pie lovers:

The first desserts I found were Special K bars.

These chocolatey desserts are a perfect crowd-pleasing dessert for non pie lovers. You can find the recipe to this dessert anywhere online. It takes only a few steps to bake Special K Bars, so they are extremely easy to make. You need light corn syrup, sugar, peanut butter, Special K cereal, chocolate chips, butterscotch chips, and butter for this amazing dessert. They should take about 15 minutes to make!

The second dessert I discovered was Carrot Cake.

I had a lot of trouble creating a good carrot cake. What I found was the secret to keeping these desserts so moist is using apple sauce. Same as mentioned above, you can find plenty of recipes for carrot cake online. My favorite part to making this dessert was making the frosting. The only downside to baking the carrot cake was I needed a lot of spices- like cinnamon, nutmeg, etc. I did not have all of that, so I had to make a couple trips to the grocery store.

Overall it was not that hard to find simple recipes for desserts that can be used for Thanksgiving. There are plenty of other recipes out there that you can try at home!
