From kindergarten until my senior year of high school, I ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day for lunch. At one point, my friends became slightly concerned that I still refused to eat anything else. I assured them I was getting other essential nutrients at breakfast and dinner, but as far as lunch was concerned, it was always going to be a PB&J.
When Daily Provisions announced its addition of a peanut butter and jelly item to their menu, you can imagine my excitement. For those who aren’t familiar with Daily Provisions, let’s refresh:
Fresh Cup of Joe
Daily Provisions graced the streets of Union Square back in March of this year. This café is part of Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group (Danny Meyer = founder of Shake Shack). It was an instant success, partly due to its esteemed crullers, a.k.a. the best donuts you will ever consume in your life. Cinnamon, maple, or plain glazed, these crullers garnered rave reviews from the likes of Ina Garten and Bon Appetit.
Aside from fresh baked bread and pastries, Daily Provisions serves lunch, dinner, and Salt and Straw ice cream. Breakfast will always be my favorite time to go, especially since the crullers sell out by 11 am, but there really is never a bad time to stop by this coffee shop.
Back to School Special
On September 9, Daily Provisions announced via an Instagram post that they were adding three PB&J specials to the menu for one week. The options: a peanut butter and jelly donut, hand-pie, and — the classic — sandwich. Customers voted throughout the week, though it was clearly a difficult choice to make.
Aside from being a tasty addition to the menu, one dollar from each peanut butter and jelly item sold went towards the nonprofit organization, Union Square Partnership.
In the end, the peanut butter and jelly sandwich won the hearts of all the loyal New York customers. Who could blame them? I know all too well that sometimes, a good PB&J can be the cure to just about anything.
Now until the end of the semester, Daily Provisions will be selling their PB&J sandwich: peanut butter and concord grape jelly stuffed in between a homemade English muffin, freshly pressed on a hot griddle. High school me wishes this sandwich existed so I could have packed it every day for my school lunches.
