The Sewanee Bucket List

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Sewanee chapter.

Over the course of my first semester at Sewanee, I’ve learned there are a few places and foods that it seems everyone has had, or at the very least, heard of. Some of these may even be considered a right of passage. And whether you’re a senior looking back on some fond memories or freshmen looking for not Clurg alternatives, these classics are definitely worth a try. Keep reading for the Sewanee bucket list!

Granger from Pub:

Legend has it that once one has ordered the infamous bagel with cream cheese and bacon (and optional chicken strips), that the individual is automatically thrown out of Pub… or that it’s at least a sign they gotta hit the hay. Want to put that theory to the test? Try it on your next late-night visit.

Oreo Balls from Mountain Goat:

Like everything else from Mountain Goat, these bite-sized cake-like balls covered in chocolate with chocolate drizzle and/ or sprinkles are not to disappoint. Better yet is that they’re bite-sized and easy to bring home. A great gift for a friend, more than a friend, or even better– yourself.

Picnic at the Cross (or Green’s View):

Grab a sandwich to go from Clurg, Mountain Goat, Subway, or Stirling’s and a blanket to watch the sunset across the Cumberland Plateau. Perfect photos for the Gram and some fresh air won’t hurt either. See our article on the places to picnic in Sewanee for other ideas on where to go.

Creating your own Clurg hack:

Clurg hacks are a necessity especially when nothing is calling your name that night… or morning… or afternoon. And while some may include pad thai, quesadillas, and burrito bowls, it’s time to get creative and get out of last year’s rut (and don’t forget to share them with us down below!).

Skillet from the Inn:

The popular skillet consists of a fresh batch of cookies with ice cream and toppings. The three types of skillets that are offered at the Inn include oatmeal cookies with peaches and vanilla ice cream, snickerdoodle cookies with candied apple and pecans topped with vanilla ice cream, or chocolate cookies with caramel drizzle and topped with chocolate ice cream. Perfect for birthdays, classy nights out, or anything in between but be warned– they’re definitely meant to share.

Berry Field Bistro:

Although not in Sewanee, this eclectic restaurant is a necessity to try while waiting for your flight from the Nashville airport or a ride to Sewanee. Their menu includes creative waffle dishes, colorful salads, classic sandwiches (I highly recommend the breakfast ones), and a wide range of pastries and juices completes the menu. Definitely a healthier alternative to hamburgers and chicken nuggets.
