How to Celebrate Earth Day in Seattle 2018

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Seattle U chapter.

Earth Day is one of my favorite days of the year because it’s all about celebrating the planet we live on and learning about how to protect it. There are many great ways to celebrate Earth Day in Seattle, and these are just a few ideas to get you started. Personally, I love to get outside and explore the natural world, but there are many events happening all over the city. This year Earth Day is on a Sunday, meaning it is even easier to spend all day celebrating Earth.

Go for a Hike

Probably the easiest and most common way to celebrate Earth Day is to get outside and go for a hike. Now in the city, this can be a little bit difficult but there are lots of parks in and around the city that provide beautiful trails. The TOTAGO (Turn off the App go Outside) app helps you find trails nearby and even lets you find hikes that you can get to by only taking public transportation.

Visit a State Park

Amongst other days, the Washington state parks are completely free on Earth Day. There are many other free days but there’s no better day to explore a state park than Earth Day. Here’s a list of all of the Washington state parks and where they are located. There are so many parks that are just begging to be explored.

Visit the Pacific Science Center

This Earth Day, the Pacific Science Center is putting on a laser show to celebrate science, conservation and Earth’s beauty. Tickets must be purchased in advance, but this isn’t a show you want to miss. The Pacific Science Center is a great place to visit on Earth Day even if you don’t see the laser show. You can learn so much about our planet and the ecosystems in and around Seattle.

Work with SCA

On Earth Day, The Student Conservation Association is hosting work days across the country to help conserve the Washington Park Arboretum. Learn more about the event here and join the SCA and other organizations to help protect the green spaces in Seattle.

Attend a Beach Cleanup

The Seattle Department of Parks and Recreation is hosting tons of events throughout the month of April to celebrate Earth Month. But on Earth Day, they are hosting a beach cleanup at Discovery Park. Check out this page for more information about the beach cleanup and other Earth Month events put on by the department.

Visit a Farmers Market

There’s no better way to celebrate Earth Day than with food. And farmers markets provide arguably the best fresh produce. Check out this link for more information about the farmers market in your neighborhood.

There are endless ways to celebrate Earth Day and these are just a few ideas to get you started. Earth Day (and Earth Month) is all about celebrating our planet and learning about how to protect it. So no matter how you celebrate this year, remember to be aware of your impact and be thankful for the beautiful planet we live on.

I am a huge environmentalist and nature nerd! I also love photography and spending time outside.
