Aloha Hula Pie. It originated at Kimo’s in Maui and has since spread to other restaurants across Hawaii. It even makes an appearance at a few restaurants like Jake’s and Sunnyside on the shore of Lake Tahoe. My family and I loved the macadamia ice cream, cookie crust, chocolate sauce slice of dessert and decided to try making our own.
So why Trader Joe’s ingredients? Because I’ve found through trial and error, Joe Joe’s cookies make a far better cookie crust paste than Oreos, and the French Vanilla Ice Cream from Trader Joe’s is unparalleled. Make it your own with how many macadamia nuts you use (or change it up with a different type), add whipped cream, splash some coffee in with your chocolate sauce—whatever feels right.
#SpoonTip: Use a springform pan for easy slicing at the end.

Spread parchment paper into pan and cover bottom with Joe-Joeâs paste. Freeze for 10 minutes.
Add 1/2 carton of softened ice cream on top of cookie crust.
#SpoonTip: Cut the ice cream carton down the sides and use a large blade knife to cut off chunks.
Chop up macadamia nuts.
Sprinkle half of the macadamia nuts on top of the first ice cream layer. Freeze for 10 minutes.
Add another layer of ice cream to finish the container.
Drizzle with chocolate sauce.
