These Homemade Dipping Sauces for Chicken Will Make You Forget About Ketchup

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Portsmouth chapter.

Baking chicken for the first time is a rite of passage many students are nervous to go through. What if I undercook the chicken and give myself food poisoning? What if I overcook it and it comes out really tough? So when you finally cook the chicken (per Mom’s instructions), it’s a moment for celebration…until you realize, dang this chicken is bland. Whether you’re fighting the good fight against bland food or are just looking to shake up your usual chicken and ketchup routine, these homemade dipping sauces for chicken are good to have in your repertoire.

1. Honey Mustard

Honey mustard and chicken is a match made in heaven. This homemade honey mustard recipe is super easy to make and comes together in just five minutes.

#SpoonTip: I like to add a pinch of paprika to my honey mustard for an extra bit of flavor.

2. BBQ

This homemade teriyaki sauce is much more exciting than regular ketchup. You can use this sauce for dipping chicken and save it for later use in stir-fries.

4. Sweet and Sour Sauce

Get the taste of your favorite Chinese takeout dish without the wait time with this homemade sweet and sour sauce. Serve it with rice, a salad, or even in a bun!

5. Tzatziki

This condiment is creamy with the slightest bit of tang, and is perfect for your dipping chicken, cucumbers, and falafel. This recipe comes together in 10 minutes and tastes better the longer it sits in your fridge.

#SpoonTip: Save and wash any mini jam jars you have on hand and use them to take a spoonful of tzatziki in your lunch.

6. Pesto

I love pesto because it’s super versatile: you can use it on pasta, in sandwiches, and on chicken. My mum always makes a huge batch of pesto and it finishes within a couple of days. If you’re not super into regular pesto, try sun-dried tomato pesto or mint pesto instead.

7. Marinara

Marinara sauce is an essential recipe to have in your repertoire.  It’s simple, delicious, and very nutritious. This sauce recipe only takes a couple of ingredients and is ready in no time. Leftover sauce can be used in lasagna or pasta bakes, too.

These dipping sauces for chicken can be reused in so many meals. From sandwiches to soups to pastas, you can enjoy these homemade sauces for multiple meals. Not to mention, you can freeze many of them as well, which will make your life easier in a few months!
