5 Best Plates To Get At BBB

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Ole Miss chapter.

Just down the road from the Oxford Square, the famous Big Bad Breakfast (BBB) is serving southern inspired dishes that will satisfy any craving. The charming atmosphere welcomes everyone to take a seat in their long wooden booths, or the classic breakfast bar where many regulars sit to read the daily newspaper.

These 5 plates are the perfect representation of the southern inspired, homestyle food that BBB creates, and also what keeps the line out the door.

1. Skillet

Every one of the skillets at BBB has the perfect combination of ingredients, ranging from the basic egg, bacon, sausage and ham, to the vegetarian option filled with fresh veggies, sweet potatoes, goat cheese, and Swiss cheese. They come out of the kitchen steaming in personal-sized cast iron skillets, filled with your choice of ingredients making for the ideal breakfast to keep you full all day long.

2. Big Bad BLT

Okay I know what you’re thinking, who orders a BLT at a breakfast place? But after trying this sandwich, you will be asking yourself, “Where has this been all my life?” First off, the house cured Tabasco/ brown sugar bacon is the star of this dish. The famous BBB bacon is so popular that they sell it at the checkout, so you can have delicious bacon any time you please! Adding a fried egg to this BLT makes for the quintessential breakfast or lunch sandwich.

3. Fried Oyster Eggs Benedict/Cheese Grits/Pancakes

Whoever decided to switch up the classic Eggs Benedict by adding fried oysters is getting an A+ from me. The crisp crunch from the fried oysters mixed with the egg yolk, hollandaise and bacon is the best combination for brunch. You can’t forget about the cheese grits, which are a southern staple. BBB does cheese grits just right, and doesn’t skimp on the cheese!

I know this is more than 5 items, but BBB is so good I couldn’t help but add more to the list. A classic item at BBB is the Short Stack, which is three beautifully fluffy pancakes topped with strawberries and whipped cream. Though simple, these pancakes and a side of bacon are just what you want after a long night out.

4. Cathead with Fried Chicken

A lesser known item on the BBB menu is the Cathead. It is a buttermilk biscuit with the meat of your choosing in the middle, and cheddar cheese melted on top. If this doesn’t cure a hangover, I don’t know what will. The combination of the juicy fried chicken, cheddar, and buttery biscuit make one wonder why they have never looked at the lunch side of the menu.

5. Big Bad Lean Plate

If you’re looking for something on the healthier side, the Big Bad Lean Plate is the way to go. The egg whites and fruit keep the dish feeling light, and the sweet potato hash and chicken sausage keep you full for the rest of the day. Having the option to eat healthier is a plus, especially when you decide to consume those saved calories on mimosas and bloody mary’s on the Square later!

Big Bad Breakfast, being such a popular breakfast destination for those in and around Oxford, does usually have a line out the door. But don’t worry, the wait is worth it! Also, the BBB bar can provide you with coffee and a newspaper while you wait.

Tip from a local: Snackbar (next door to BBB) is owned by the same person, and when it starts to get crowded, they open up the bar and provide the full BBB menu and service, but you didn’t hear it from me. (Also have mimosas to make the wait a little more bearable)

So when you’re in Oxford, Mississippi, be sure to check out Big Bad Breakfast, and trust me you’ll thank me later.
