Whether you spend your summer soaking up the sun on the sand, turning up your car radio with windows-down or chilling with some friends around a campfire, a hot Spotify playlist is essential.
If you just can’t get enough of this popular summer 2019 song, this is the summer treat you should be enjoying.
“Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X
Unpopular opinion: this song is horrible. But I can’t deny the recognition won by the maybe-country song. Seventeen weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 music charts, with thirteen of those weeks at the #1 song in the country. “Old Town Road” is playing on pop, rap and country music radios; it’s everywhere. So what treat should you have if you are dancing and singing to what might be the song of the summer?
S’mores. The treat of the summer. Ice cream can (and should) be eaten any time of the year. But s’mores? Those really deserve to have campfire-roasted marshmallows, gooey chocolate and crisp graham crackers. We wait all year for the song of the summer and equally, for the treat of the summer.
“Senorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello
It seems like most of America has been begging for a collaboration between these two since “I Know What You Did Last Summer” became popular. Reasonably so, because Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello are two of the biggest names in pop music right now. The two decided to pair up and create a Miami-inspired song for the summer. The lyrics and music video (and the artists themselves) are smooth and bring the Miami heat.
If you are bopping to “Senorita” this summer, try some dulce de leche ice cream. Dulce de leche is a traditional Cuban dessert and it just so happens that Camila Cabello is Cuban-American. Translating to “candy of milk”, this confection tastes very similar to caramel and pairs perfectly with cool, creamy chocolate ice cream.
“Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers
Unless you’ve taken a six month hiatus from social media (which, is totally cool, do you), you know that the Jonas Brothers are back together and doing *the most*. Joe Jonas got married (twice), the group released an album, they are going on tour, they have an Amazon documentary, they are regular guests on NBC reality TV show, Songland, and they are on seemingly every magazine cover and late-night talk show.
If you are freaking out about the Jonas Brothers being back, and just can’t stop listening to “Sucker”, you need to cool off with a bomb pop. Yes, one of those red, white and blue ice pops from your local ice cream truck. The nostalgia of this summer treat will re-unite you to memories of jamming to the JoBros 10 years ago, when “Burning Up” was your summer song.
“Truth Hurts” by Lizzo
I. Love. This. Song. It is a true break-up anthem, and not in the I-can’t-believe-you-are-gone-my-heart-hurts way. Lizzo radiates self-love and women’s empowerment in this track. If you are getting absolutely hype to this track this summer, maybe you just want to party with your best girl friends. Or, you just got out of a relationship and are freshly single for the summer. Either way, you and “Truth Hurts” are ready to party.
Fresh fruit cocktails (or mocktails!) are your summer treat to pair with “Truth Hurts”. Just like Lizzo, you bring the party to every poolside or backyard. It just makes sense that you would be found with a cocktail in your hand.
“bad guy” by Billie Eilish
I love Billie, I love this song and I love her new album. And I’m not alone; at only 17 years old, Billie has a near cult-like following. New to the music scene, Eilish serves music and messages that are edgy, true to herself and likely not influenced by popular culture. For reference, read up on this story where she only wears baggy clothing in the public, as she doesn’t want to give anyone the opportunity to judge her body.
If “bad guy” is your summer jam, your summer treat needs to match that level of not caring what mainstream, Instagram-able foods everyone else is snacking on. It’s passion fruit, dragon fruit, rambutan and kiwi season. Colorful and crazy, these fruits aren’t the iconic strawberries and blueberries of American summer. And they’re not trying to be. Try a fresh salad of these unique and delicious fruits.
