Looking for some quality brunch fare but sick of having to wait for hours at over-hyped New York City cafes? Barrio 47 in the West Village offers a great selection of brunch food and their brunch special is perfect for those looking to cure a Sunday morning hangover (because the best way to cure a hangover is obviously to eat and drink more). Unlike most brunch spots, Barrio 47 accepts reservations, which makes snagging a table for anxiety-free.
The restaurant, and the area in general, was relatively quiet on the afternoon of our visit. The server was quick to seat us and accommodate our request for a table with better lighting.
The lobster cakes benedict stand out immediately and is one of the most popular items on the menu. While the two lobster cakes are rather small, they are moist and flavorful – not dry like many versions. Each lobster cake is prepared with habanero, which gives it a slightly spicy kick. Topped with perfectly poached eggs, this is a delicious take on a classic brunch dish.
As for lunch dishes, the black sea bass tacos are served with chipotle-tamarind guacamole and mango salsa, as well as a basket of truffle French fries.
Drink options for those having the brunch special ($35 for an entrée with 3 brunch cocktails) include bloody mary, bellini, sangria and house cocktails such as the Kir Royal (black currant liqueur and prosecco) and The Passionate (fresh passion fruit purée and prosecco).
Apart from brunch, Barrio 47 also offers happy hour specials Saturday to Thursday from 5 to 7pm and on Fridays from 4 to 7pm. From June 12 to July 13 2014, the restaurant will be open everyday from 11:30am serving food and drink specials during the FIFA World Cup season.
