Why You Need To Try Emack & Bolio’s The Next Time You Visit NYC

This article is written by a student writer from the Spoon University at Hofstra chapter.

The past few days in New York City have been extremely hot. While it is important to drink water to stay hydrated during these summer months, ice cream is also a great way to cool down. There are numerous of different ice cream and frozen yogurt shops in NYC, but Emack & Bolio’s is one you definitely need to check out.

Where Is It?

Emack & Bolio’s has many different locations throughout the United States and internationally. In New York, there are 4 different locations with one in Brooklyn, two in Manhattan, and one in Albany. I visited one of the New York City locations on 81st street and First Avenue.

What Are The Flavors?

Emack & Bolio’s has nearly 30 flavors to choose from ranging from your classic vanilla bean and chocolate to maple walnut and salted peanut butter cup. Some of the other flavors they have to choose from include: espresso, s’mores, strawberry, Oreo, banana foster, salted caramel chocolate pretzel, “deep purple” chip, grasshopper pie, caramel moose prints, and more!

For those people who are looking for a healthier alternative to ice cream they also serve a variety of flavors of frozen yogurt including non-fat vanilla and chocolate, chocolate peanut butter swirl, vegan toasted coconut, and more.

Specialty Cones

According to their website, Emack & Bolio’s created the flavored cone in 1980. These cones are not just your typical waffle cone, but are waffle cones dipped in chocolate or marshmallow and then covered with different toppings. Some of the specialty cones they have include Oreo’s, Rice Krispies, Fruit Loops, Fruity Pebbles, chocolate or rainbow sprinkles, mixed nuts, and  coconut shavings.

How Much Does It Cost?

The price of the ice cream depends on how many scoops you get and the type of cone you choose. One scoop costs $5.25, two scoops cost $6.55, three scoops cost $7.55, and a pint costs $9.25. Depending on the type of cone you choose, the price will also vary. A typical waffle cone costs $2.00. A cone decorated with sprinkles, nuts, or candy costs $2.75 and a Rice Krispie or Oreo marshmallow cone costs $3.50.

Final Thoughts

I will definitely be returning to Emack & Bolio’s next time I find myself on the Upper East Side or a different area of the city. While I think the prices are a bit steep, the taste of the ice cream makes up for it because it is sweet, rich, and delicious. The ice cream is also made from cow milk that is not injected with the hormone bST which could be used to justify the price. I am not certain if all of the shop locations are tiny, but if you are looking for a quiet place to enjoy an ice cream cone on a summer day, I would suggest taking the ice cream to the nearest park to enjoy as the shop is a bit hectic. Overall, I definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking to try a new dessert in New York City because this ice cream is like no other!
